Hierbei liegt der Fokus auf Mme de Merteuil, die die zentrale weibliche Figur der Werke ist. Der Briefroman und der auf ihm basierenden Film werden in Bezug auf das weibliche Rollenbild verglichen und analysiert. Die gesellschaftlichen Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern sind heutzutage mehr denn je ein Thema, welches zur Diskussion anregt. Ob es jemals eine vollständige Gleichberechtigung geben wird ist fraglich, vor allem da viele Menschen die Meinung vertreten, dass diese bereits eingetreten wäre oder die Frau zumindest nicht mehr so unterdrückt würde, dass ein großer kultureller Umschwung diesbezüglich notwendig wäre. Es ist wichtig, darauf hinzuweisen, dass es bisweilen große Fortschritte in dieser Hinsicht gegeben hat und die Frau heutzutage sehr viel freier ist als noch vor einigen Jahren. Allerdings gibt es auch heute noch große Disparitäten zwischen dem Stand der Geschlechter wie beispielsweise beim deutlich geringeren Gehalt oder bei der leider immer noch geläufigen sexuellen Belästigung, die einem zu Augen führen, dass eine vollkommene Gleichberechtigung keineswegs vorhanden ist. Die gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen an Frauen aufgrund ihres Geschlechts und die Folgen des sich ihnen Widersetzens sind ein bedeutendes Thema im 17821 veröffentlichten Briefroman "Les Liaisons dangereuses" von Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos und ebenso in der modernen Filmadaption "Eiskalte Engel" von Roger Kumble aus dem Jahr 19992.
