Dumas werd geboren in Villers Cotterêts in 1802, van een militaire vader die stierf kort nadat de auteur en een slavenmoeder was geboren. Als autodidact had Dumas moeite om zijn toneelstukken uit te brengen. Pas toen hij Hendrik III (1830) produceerde, was hij succesvol genoeg om zich aan het schrijven te wijden. Het was met zijn romans en feuilletons, hoewel hij bleef schrijven en theater produceren, waarmee hij een waar literair fenomeen werd. Veelvuldig auteur, meer dan 1.200 werken worden aan hem toegeschreven, hoewel veel van hen blijkbaar met vermeende medewerkers zijn geschreven. Dumas vergaarde een groot fortuin en bouwde zelfs een kasteel aan de rand van Parijs. Helaas bracht zijn hedonistische aard hem ertoe al zijn geld te verkwisten en zelfs gedwongen te worden Parijs te ontvluchten om aan zijn schuldeisers te ontsnappen. Hij stierf op 5 december 1870 in het huis van zijn zoon.
