Dieser ist nicht nur auf ein konsequent verfolgtes Kostenmanagement zurückzuführen, sondern in erster Linie ein natürliches Resultat der Unterschiede in den Elementen der angewandten Geschäftsmodelle. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt alle wesentlichen Elemente des charakteristischen Geschäftsmodells von Low-Cost Airlines vor. Dabei wird jeweils der Unterschied zu den von Network Airlines angewandten Methoden aufgezeigt und daraus resultierende Wettbewerbsvorteile analysiert, durch die Low-Cost Airlines in der Lage sind eine Kostenführerschaft am Markt zu erreichen. Dies wird durch zahlreiche Tabellen und Abbildungen veranschaulicht und durch die Daten von 14 empirisch untersuchten Fluggesellschaften belegt. Der Aufbau der Arbeit gliedert sich in den Grundlagen in einen Abriss der Deregulierung des Luftverkehrsmarktes, eine Vorstellung der charakteristischen Elemente und Strategien von Low-Cost und Network Airlines und eine Einführung in die grundlegende Kostenstruktur von Fluggesellschaften. Der Hauptteil besteht in der Vorstellung der Kernelemente des Geschäftsmodells der Low-Cost Airlines, wobei jeweils die Unterschiede und möglichen Wettbewerbsvorteile gegenüber den Methoden der Network Airlines verdeutlicht werden. Es werden die Abweichungen zwischen den beiden Geschäftsmodellen beschrieben, welche in der Methode der Streckenführung, der Wahl der angeflogenen Flughäfen, der Betriebsauslastung der Flugzeuge, der Bezahlung und Produktivität der Mitarbeiter, der Flottenkonfiguration, dem Revenue Management, der Distributionspolitik und weiteren Methoden, die zu einer Reduktion der Stückkosten beitragen können, liegen.
