Dieses Todesurteil wurde am siebten März 203 nach Christus in Karthago vollstreckt. Dabei steht in der 21 Kapitel umfassenden Passio das Tagebuch der Römerin Vibia Perpetua im Mittelpunkt, das sie während ihrer Haft verfasste. Die junge Frau, die aus einem vornehmen Haus stammt und klassisch gebildet, wie auch standesgemäß verheiratet ist, berichtet in ihren Aufzeichnungen überwiegend von ihren Auseinandersetzungen mit ihrem Vater und erzählt ihre Visionen nach, die sie während der Haft empfängt. Aber auch ihre Konfrontation mit dem nahenden Tod und ihre Ängste und Sorgen um ihren Sohn - er ist noch ein Säugling - und um ihre Familie werden von ihr thematisiert. Zudem berichtet sie von ihrer Taufe im Gefängnis, denn zum Zeitpunkt der Verhaftung sind die Christen noch im Katechumenenstand. Den zweiten Teil der Passio bilden die Aufzeichnungen eines weiteren Häftlings - Saturus - der sich den Behörden nach der Verhaftung der anderen freiwillig stellt. In der von ihm aufgezeichneten Vision verarbeitet er, wie zuvor Perpetua, das kommende Martyrium. Daran anschließend berichtet der Redaktor von einer zweiten weiblichen Gefangenen namens Felicitas. Sie ist zum Zeitpunkt der Gefangennahme im achten Monat schwanger und bangt, da Schwangere nach römischem Recht nicht hingerichtet werden dürfen, nicht mit ihren Freunden, sondern zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt, hingerichtet zu werden.
