Die Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich werden zum Teil noch immer von Vorurteilen geprägt: Als Konrad Adenauer am 14. September 1958 zu der ersten Begegnung mit de Gaulle nach Colombey fuhr, hatten er und auch seine Begleiter schwere Bedenken. Der alte Kanzler hatte dem Urteil der Fachleute vertraut und fürchtete, daß de Gaulle "antideutsch" eingestellt sei und "eine Verständigung mit ihm außerordentlich schwierig" wäre. Offenbar hatte aber niemand die Schriften des Generals zur Kenntnis genommen. Schon 1924 sprach dieser in seinem ersten Buch "Über die Zwietracht beim Feind" davon, daß das deutsche Volk wegen seiner Haltung im Krieg selbst bei den Feinden "Erstaunen und Bewunderung" hervorgerufen habe. Enge Mitarbeiter de Gaulles und selbst sein Sohn - in den Erinnerungen an den Vater von 2004 - bestätigen es: Zu keinem anderen Land besaß der General eine so enge Affinität und Sympathie wie für den deutschen Gegner. Glücklicherweise hat wenigstens Adenauer sehr schnell begriffen, wie falsch er informiert worden war. Umgekehrt täuschte sich auch de Gaulle, als ihm vier Jahre später die Menschen in Deutschland zujubelten: Bei Abschluß des deutsch-französischen Vertrages kurz nach seiner Reise durch das Nachbarland hatte er nicht erkannt, daß die Bundesrepublik wegen Berlin den Schutz der USA nicht entbehren konnte. So kam es, daß der Vertrag vom Bundestag mit der berühmten Präambel entwertet wurde. Die Liste der Irrtümer auf beiden Seiten ließe sich verlängern über Mitterrands Verhalten 1989/90 hinaus bis in die Gegenwart. Man kannte sich immer zu wenig, und kennt sich auch jetzt noch nicht genug, und viel Unverständnis beruht auf der Unkenntnis der Geschichte des Partners. Die deutsche Vergangenheit mit ihrer bis auf den heutigen Tag polyzentrischen Entwicklung ist im Nachbarland schwer zu vermitteln. Auf deutscher Seite ist die französische Geschichte mit ihrer fast linearen Herausbildung des zentralisierten Nationalstaates wenig bekannt. Auf beiden Seiten des Rheins leben daher die Vorurteile fort. Dies ist um so bedauerlicher, als die Entwicklung in Europa gerade von unseren beiden Ländern eine enge und ungestörte Zusammenarbeit erfordert.
