Das Verfahren Vonaparte's war infofern neu, als er es verschmahte, die Fursten zu vertreiben und die Volker mit demokratischer Freiheit zu beglucken, wie Viele, vielleicht das Direktorium selbst, von ihm erwartet hatten. Aber er verfuhr eigenmachtig und wusste wohl, das Directorium werde nichts gegen feine Handlungsweise einwenden, wenn er nur Siege erfocht und Geld und Trophaen in Hulle und Fulle nach Paris fchickte. Nur um die Freiheitsmanncr zu beschwichtigen, deren Verdacht von sich abzulenken und zugleich um Italien durch innere Partciung zu zerrutten und sich den Sieg zu erleichtern, verkundete er von Mailand aus wir sind die Freunde aller Volker und lieben vor allen die Enkel des Brutus und Scipio. Wir werden das Capitol wieder aufrichten und das Volk der Romer wiedererwecken." Nur in dem Theile Italiens, wohin keine Franzosen gekommen warm, konnte ihnen diese Sprache Anhanger gewinnen.
