About the Book

The Baja Verapaz District encompasses an ophiolitic complex protruding metamorphic rocks from the Chuacús Series in Central Guatemala. The targeted mineralization is represented by two types of Nickel-Cobalt laterite deposits, an in situ type and an alluvial-deluvial type. A typical laterite profile consists of a Limonitic Horizon which is separated from the Saprolite Horizon by a transition zone named the Mottled Zone. The Saprolite Horizon lays over the Saprock that transitions into the Bedrock, usually represented by serpentinized olivine-rich Lherzolites or Dunites. The usual thickness of these deposits averages 33 meters, but there are known intersections of more than 90 meters in the area. Nickel content varies from 0.4% in the Limonite Horizon to over 1.5% at the bottom of the Saprolite Horizon. Higher values are sometime found associated to the presence of Garnierite. Cobalt values vary from 0.08 to 0.2%. There is also the presence of traces of Au and PGM, usually associated to the Mottled Zone. The lineament analysis completed over an area of 1,541.22 km2 encompassing the whole Baja Verapaz ophiolitic complex, was aimed to identify other potential zones of laterite development in this area. The lineament analysis was completed using a combination of topographic maps in electronic format, aero photos and a D.E.M. of the region and included an aeromagnetic survey of the area. The study also included image interpretation of satellite images and 3D strain and stress analysis. The study indicated the existence of new potential targets and clarified the relationship between the known deposits.
About the Author: Ricardo A. Valls, P.Geo., M. Sc. As a professional geologist with thirty-two years in the mining industry, I have extensive geological, geochemical, and mining experience, managerial skills, and a solid background in research techniques, and training of technical personnel. I am fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Russian. I have been involved in various projects world-wide. Projects included from regional reconnaissance to local mapping, diamond drilling and RC-drilling programs, open pit and underground mapping and sampling, geochemical sampling and interpretation, and several exploration techniques pertaining to the search for diamonds, PGM, gold, nickel, silver, base metals, industrial minerals, oil & gas, and other magmatic, hydrothermal, porphyritic, VMS and SEDEX ore deposits. Special strengths are related to acquisition of new properties, geochemical and geological studies, management and organization, geomathematical analysis and modelling, compositional data analysis, structural studies, database design, QA&QC studies, exploration studies and writing technical reports. P.Geo. registered in the province of Ontario. Dr. Vadim Galkine, Ph.D., P.Geo. Ph.D, Doctor of Science, P.Geo. registered in the province of Ontario. Former Full Professor of Moscow State University (Russia) with about 20 years of teaching experience in Russia and internationally. For three years has worked as a Research Associate at University of Toronto, Canada. Dr. Galkine designed original method of paleostress magnitude estimations using minerals structure and Deformation Mechanism Maps. He has also been building and applying tectonophysical modeling method to locate zones of "tectonic" concentrators and predict the areas of seismotectonic and environmental danger. Well-known as an expert in complex structural mapping, structural assemblages analysis and in 3D-modeling. In the "practical" geology field developed a cost-effective original technique of Remote Exploration - a combination of structural lineament analysis and physical modeling. The method has been successively used for exploration targeting by many companies all around the world. Dr. Galkine has been engaged in the broad variety of industry-related Canadian and international projects as an exploration manager and geologist, team leader, VP Exploration, consultant and as a scientist. He has been working on uranium, base and precious metals, emeralds, oil and gas.
