Sie erfassen, überprüfen, speichern, reorganisieren, modellieren und analysieren raumbezogene Daten. Diese Eigenschaften eines GIS nutzen Unternehmen um Entscheidungen auf einer fundierten Basis zu fällen. GIS sind dabei nicht an ein bestimmtes Anwendungsgebiet gebunden, vielmehr eignen sie sich aufgrund der von ihnen bereitgestellten Methoden und Techniken für eine Vielzahl betriebswirtschaftlicher Fragestellungen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die Entscheidungsunterstützung und Visualisierung von Daten. Rund 80 % der Unternehmensentscheidungen besitzen einen Raumbezug, setzen also Geoinformationen voraus, weshalb das Interesse am Einsatz von GIS ständig ansteigt. Unternehmen nutzen GIS in den Bereichen Marketing, Standortplanung und in Analysen von Markt- und Vertriebsgebieten. Durch die Darstellung von "Best-Practices" ausgewählter Bereiche, gelingt es, den GIS-Einsatz idealtypisch darzustellen. Fallbeispiele aus der betrieblichen Praxis verdeutlichen die Einsatzpotenziale von GIS. Diese Einsatzmöglichkeiten stehen auch Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) offen, um ihre politischen, gesellschaftlichen, sozialen und ökonomischen Interessen zu verwirklichen. Die "Best-Practices" sind eine Orientierungshilfe für NGOs, ihre Ziele erfolgsorientiert umzusetzen. Diese Arbeit ermittelt neue Anwendungsszenarien von GIS für NGOs anhand von konkreten Fallbeispielen aus der herkömmlichen Unternehmenspraxis.
