Aux deux extrémités du verger immense, sous de larges pommiers branchus, des violons criards et des tambours d'occasion, marquaient la mesure aux danseurs qui avaient quitté veste et gilet pour être plus à l'aise. Au bout de quelques heures de ce plaisir fait de vacarme et de mouvement, les promeneurs devinrent plus rares; chacun songeait au retour. Nous dûmes partir les premiers, bien à regret, et non sans nous être fait prier longtemps. L'autorité maternelle nous contraignit, en fin de compte, à reprendre le chemin du Chaffard, où nous arrivâmes à la grande nuit, dormant d'un oeil et tirant d'une jambe, la tête bourdonnante encore de musique, de cris, de rires et de chansons. Les deux semaines qui suivirent ce dimanche-là, se passèrent sans incidents. L'ouvrage pressait; la fin de la moisson, très en retard cette année-là, et le fauchage des regains occupaient tous les bras. C'était un grand entrain à la ferme et partout. Comme nous aimions ces temps de moisson et de fenaison ! Partis, dès le matin, avec une troupe quelconque d'ouvriers, choisissant de préférence la plus nombreuse, nous écoutions avec un plaisir indicible les contes, les chansons, les mille cancans bavards des travailleurs insouciants. C'était là que se répandaient tous les bruits, toutes les médisances, les nouvelles du canton; chacun apportait sa part de réflexions malignes, et les rires payaient amplement la peine des conteurs. Ce fut dans une de ces réunions de bonnes langues que nous apprîmes les motifs de l'altercation qui avait eu lieu entre Lallò et ses parents: il s'agissait, en effet, d'une fantaisie de coquetterie de Marianne. Sachant que son cousin devait aller à la ville, le dimanche matin, pour des commissions pressées, elle l'avait chargé de lui rapporter une coiffe neuve commandée en vue de la vogue, où elle se promettait de briller au bras du beau garçon. Cette coiffe, elle l'avait rêvée bien belle, bien riche, capable de faire rager Marie Guédioz et Rosalie Vitton, capable d'exciter la sainte colère de la prieure et l'envie de toutes ses compagnes. Aussi était-ce un secret que cette commande. Lallò seul devait être mis dans la confidence, car seul, il avait assez d'amour pour pardonner cette faiblesse. Donc, c'était entendu: son cousin laisserait partir Fanny avec le pain bénit, et s'en irait bien en cachette chez la marchande, laquelle avait juré solennellement que tout serait prêt à l'heure. Mais on sait ce qu'est un serment de modiste. Quand Lallò vint lui réclamer la coiffe promise, c'est à peine si elle l'avait commencée. L'amoureux, sachant ce qui l'attendait au retour s'il arrivait les mains vides, déclara qu'il ne partirait pas sans avoir le bonnet. Bien lui en prit: une heure après, il repassait au pas de course le pont de la Garatte en emportant le précieux paquet. Mais le temps s'était écoulé, et Marianne n'avait pu se rendre à la messe ce jour-là. Après l'événement, étaient venus les commentaires. Toutes celles que la toilette du Quinsonnet avait éblouies ou écrasées, ne tarissaient pas de propos malveillants: - Le bon Dieu ne pouvait point bénir une fille qui avait le coeur de danser un jour où elle avait manqué aux offices... Et on verrait bien..., et cela ne finirait pas ainsi... Enfin, tout le monde la déchirait à belles dents.
