Publicada en 1879, esta polémica pero exitosa novela de Juan Valera, inspirada en la novela erótica francesa, se desarrolla en ambientes cosmopolitas que el autor conocía bien gracias a su faceta profesional de diplomático.En esta novela, cuya aparición suscitó un escándalo literario, acompañado de un éxito editorial, Juan Valera traslada su habitual escenario andaluz a ambientes cosmopolitas bien conocidos por él en su andadura diplomática. En la línea de la novela erótica francesa, el autor dista tanto del naturalismo como la novela de tesis; no escamotea las situaciones atrevidas, pero tampoco preconiza el amor libre y el desprecio de las normas sociales: la realidad emerge artísticamente depurada.La protagonista, Rafaela, tiene cierto parecido con Elisa la Malagueña y con Juanita la Larga en su faceta de mujer libre que no se somete a las reglas que la sociedad impone a las de su sexo.
About the Author: Juan Valera y Alcalá-Galiano (Cabra, Córdoba, 18 de octubre de 1824 - Madrid, 18 de abril de 1905) fue un escritor, diplomático y político español. Hijo de José Valera y Viaña y de Dolores Alcalá-Galiano, marquesa de la Paniega. Estudió Lengua y Filosofía en el seminario de Málaga entre 1837 y 1840 y en el colegio Sacromonte de Granada en 1841. Luego inició estudios de Filosofía y Derecho en la Universidad de Granada. Empezó a ejercer la carrera diplomática en Nápoles junto al embajador y poeta Ángel de Saavedra, Duque de Rivas; allí estuvo dos años y medio aprendiendo griego y entablando una amistad profunda con Lucía Paladí, marquesa de Bedmar, "La Dama Griega" o "La Muerta," como gustaba de llamarla, a quien quiso mucho y que le marcó enormemente. Después, distintos destinos lo llevaron a viajar por buena parte de Europa y América: Dresde, San Petersburgo, Lisboa, Río de Janeiro, Nápoles, Washington, París, Bruselas y Viena. De todos estos viajes dejó constancia en un entretenido epistolario excepcionalmente bien escrito e inmediatamente publicado sin su conocimiento en España, lo que le molestó bastante, pues no ahorraba datos sobre sus múltiples aventuras amorosas. Fue especialmente importante su enamoramiento de la actriz Magdalena Brohan. En 1861 se casó en París con Dolores Delavat. En 1858 se jubiló y decidió establecerse en Madrid, donde inició una carrera política: fue diputado por Archidona, oficial de la secretaría de estado, subsecretario y ministro de Instrucción Pública con Amadeo de Saboya. En 1860 explicó en el Ateneo de Madrid la Historia crítica de nuestra poesía con un éxito inmenso. Le eligieron miembro de la Real Academia Española en 1862. Fue embajador en Lisboa, Bruselas, Viena y Washington; en esta última ciudad mantuvo una relación amorosa con la hija del secretario de estado estadounidense, Katherine C. Bayard, que acabó suicidándose. Durante sus últimos años, aquejado de ceguera, mantuvo una famosa tertulia nocturna en su casa de Madrid a la que acudían entre otros Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo y Ramón Pérez de Ayala. Colaboró en diversas revistas desde que como estudiante lo hiciera en La Alhambra. Fue director de una serie de periódicos y revistas, fundó El Cócora y El Contemporáneo y escribió en Revista de Ambos Mundos, Revista Peninsular, El Estado, La América, El Mundo Pintoresco, La Malva, La Esperanza, El Pensamiento Español y otras muchas revistas.
