Oder fördern gerade Laster die allgemeine wirtschaftliche Wohlfahrt wie es Bernard Mandeville in seiner "Bienenfabel" 1705 propagierte? Die Frage nach den Wurzeln, den Grundwerten und dem Menschenbild der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft, insbesondere nach der Rolle des Eigeninteresses, bildet den Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit. Zunächst werde ich den ethischen Kontext zu Mandevilles Zeiten darstellen und verschiedene tugendethische Konzepte betrachten, insbesondere von Aristoteles, Thomas von Aquin, der puritanisch-calvinistischen Ethik und von Shaftesbury. Mandeville brach mit seiner "Bienenfabel" mit der traditionellen Einheit von Individual- und Sozialethik. Neben Mandevilles Menschen- und Gesellschaftsbild, das sich im Wesentlichen auf Thomas Hobbes stützt, werde ich vor allem auf das Mandeville-Paradoxon, wonach es gerade die persönlichen Laster der Menschen sind, die zum Allgemeinwohl führen, ausführlich eingehen. Den nächsten großen Themenkomplex werden die Konzepte des Klassischen Liberalismus (Adam Smith) und des Libertarismus (Friedrich August von Hayek) bilden. Im Anschluss werde ich auf die Entwicklung der Idee der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft eingehen, wie sie ursprünglich angedacht war ausgehend von der Kritik der ordoliberalen Schule am Klassischen Liberalismus. Die Wurzeln der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft liegen vor allem im Ordoliberalismus, wie ihn Walter Eucken vertreten hat. Anschließend werde ich das Konzept der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft betrachten und dabei auf die Ansätze von Wilhelm Röpke, Alexander Rüstow und Alfred Müller-Armack, dem Namensgeber der "Sozialen Marktwirtschaft", sowie die Katholische Soziallehre mit ihren Prinzipien der Solidarität und Subsidiarität als w
