Neben den Bruchen und Schicksalen ihrer Charaktere schreibt die Autorin die Liebe groß. In ihr sieht sie die Chance, dass Menschen aufeinander zugehen und sich miteinander Herausforderungen stellen. Sei es denen hier in Europa, in Afrika oder in der gesamten Welt. Wenn der kleine Thando die Umstande zu seiner Gunst beeinflussen kann, durfen wir seinem Beispiel folgen. Umgeben von Gewalt, Hunger und Gangster-Aktivitaten verbringt Thando, ein Waisenjunge aus Kapstadt, seine Kindheit in einem sudafrikanischen Township. Trotzdem besitzt er etwas, wovon andere Kinder des Townships nur traumen konnen – die Liebe seiner Großmutter Rebecca, die sich seit dem Tod seiner Eltern um Thando kummert und versucht, ihn zu beschutzen. Doch Liebe allein reicht nicht aus, um zu uberleben. Rebecca wird alter, ihr Korper immer schwacher.Daher ist es Thandos Aufgabe, dafur zu sorgen, dass seine Großmutter und er irgendwie uber die Runden kommen. Die im Township vorherrschende Gewalt pragt zunehmend Thandos Alltag, als er, um etwas Geld zu verdienen, zunehmend in laufende Gang-Rivalitaten verwickelt wird. Sorge und Angste, die kein Kind dieser Welt haben sollte, sind im Leben von Thando an der Tagesordnung. Er muss mit ansehen, wie seine vierzehnjahrige Freundin Liz kurz davorsteht, an einen deutlich alteren Mann zwangsverheiratet zu werden. Und Thando ist machtlos, als Rebeccas Gesundheit schwindet. Er selbst begibt sich bei der Erledigung seiner Aufgaben mit Gang-Mitgliedern zunehmend in Gefahr. Der Zusammenhalt und die Verbundenheit zwischen Thando und Rebecca ist schon immer die einzige Konstante im Leben des Jungens gewesen, doch als Geheimnisse aus Rebeccas Vergangenheit die Gegenwart der beiden einholt, steht die Beziehung zwischen Thando und Rebecca auf der Kippe.
