Plaasjapies aan die anderkant mag dalk terug gevoer word na hulle eie dae op die plaas en met verlange terugdink aan hulle ervarings en sorgelose tye in die platteland. Die boek is geskoei op 'n meer eenvoudige lewe rondom 'n klein plattelandse dorpie in die Riemland. Wat vroeër bietjie van 'n spotnaam was (amper soos takhaar) is deur baie boere aangeneem as hulle omgewings naam. Is die Riemland in die Oos-Vrystaat dan nie een van die mooiste dele van ons land nie? Die denkbeeldige gemeenskap van Rietfontein, iewers tussen Bethlehem en Frankfort, is 'n plattelandse dorpie waar die storie afspeel. Leer ken 'n klompie boeremense, kyk wat hulle aanvang en proe saam met hulle aan die tradisionele kos en lekkernye wat hulle geniet. Ervaar die die plaaslewe soos net Makkie dit kan vertel. Ons eerste ervaring saam met die "Riemlanders" begin duisende kilometers verder Noord in die Sahara woestyn Wes van Kaïro. Twee beroemde aanvoerders het kragte gemeet naby El Alamein. Die bloed van duisende manskappe het diep in die dorre sand van Egipte ingetrek terwyl Montgomery stadig die oorhand begin kry het oor die geslepe Rommel. Die slag was van deurslaggewende belang en het gelei tot die ontrekking van die Duitsers uit Afrika. 'n Strategiese oorwinning, wat ongelukkig diep sielkundige wonde op die oorlewendes nagelaat het. Gedurende die "hel" in die woestyn, was die Riemlanders daar - dag en nag soos die kanonne en bomme wat nooit opgehou het nie. Makkie neem ons tussen hulle tente, deur die loopgrawe en tot by die veld hospitaal van die Rooi Kruis. Die lewens van talle jong mans het in daardie paar dae vir ewig verander. Makkie de Beer skryf uit haar hart uit en het 'n wye ervaring van die lewe en 'n uiteenlopende vriendekring. Haar karakters voel later soos familielede en vriende wat jy bladsy vir bladsy beter leer ken en liefkry. Hulle is nie sonder foute nie en net soos ons gewone mense, probeer hulle om 'n lewe te maak vir hulleself en hulle geliefdes. Ervaar die hartklop van 'n plaas en voel saam met hulle, in hulle menslike pogings om geluk en liefde te vind. Nader aan die grond en midde in die natuur wissel die emosies soos die seisoene - van warm luilekker somersdae tot bittere koue en 'n stryd om oorlewing vir mens en dier.
About the Author: My naam is Makkie de Beer, 'n 75 jarige weduwee met 'n liefde vir gedigte rym en 'n passie vir stories skryf. My tuiste is die suidelike voetheuwels van die misterieuse Zoutpansberg in die Limpopo provinsie van Suid-Afrika. Ek het op Kareepoort naby Brits groot geword, my pa was Carel en my ma Lettie van Wyk. Na ek getroud is met my boer/skrywer man B.K., het ek hom bygestaan met die boerdery op De Kroon onderkant die Hartebeespoortdam. Op 'n plaas langs die Krokodilrivier het ons geboer, gedroom en vier woelige seuns groot gemaak. Hulle is Jaco, Karel, Bertie en Buks. (Ek bly by my jongste seun Buks en sy vrou Adri op Louis Trichardt.) Na ons aftrede het ons eers op Kosmos langs die dam gebly en daarna Hoedspruit toe getrek waar my man oorlede is. Van daar af het my lewe 'n paar ander draaie gemaak voordat ek opge-eindig het op Louis Trichardt. Ek is baie lief vir gedigte skryf maar my eerste "plaas roman" is nou beskikbaar met die naam "Gees van die Labrador". Die storie gaan oor die wel en weë van 'n paar families in die "Riemland". Hierdie is 'n aangrypende verhaal van die boeregemeenskap van Rietfontein in die Oos-Vrystaat. Ongewone dinge wat die lewens van doodgewone mense ingrypend verander. Word deel van hierdie familie en geniet bietjie die gesonde onskuldige plaaslewe van ons voorvaders.
