Während in der vorovidischen Dichtung das Pathos der Liebe und des willkürlich- unerbittlichen Liebesgottes auf ernsthafte Weise behandelt wurde, fasst Ovid Liebe als ein nicht so ernst zu nehmendes Spiel auf, das durch die Regeln und Topoi der Vorgänger schon festgelegt ist2. Brooks Otis sieht Ovids Liebeselegie sogar als eine "reductio ad absurdum" der Gattung wie sie für Properz und Tibull charakteristisch war, die sich durch "Umschweife und irreführende Ernsthaftigkeit"3 auszeichnet. Ovid entwickelt das Thema in Anlehnung an Tibull und Properz, die zum tragischen Genus tendierten, zwar spielerisch und komisch, aber mit dennoch täuschend echter Ernsthaftigkeit. Die Amores bestehen, so wie sie uns in der zweiten Ausgabe überliefert sind, aus drei Büchern. Von den fünfzehn Gedichten des ersten Buches sind die Elegien zwei bis sieben und neun bis vierzehn thematisch parallel angeordnet; sie werden umrahmt von den Programmgedichten eins, acht und fünfzehn4. Der Grund für das Verfassen einer Elegie (am. 1.1) ist der Liebesgott Amor, der ein Versmaß stahl und den Dichter mit einem Liebespfeil traf, so dass dieser von seinem Vorhaben ein Epos zu schreiben abkam und sich in Corinna verliebte. So wie sich die Erfüllung in der Liebe (1.5) und die Absage (1.12) gegenüberstehen, so entsprechen sich auch die Elegie 1.6, die hier genauer analysiert werden soll, mit der nächtlichen Klage vor der Tür der Geliebten und die Elegie 1.13 mit dem Abschied am Morgen.
