Schon fruh ertonten Klagen daruber, die nie ganz verstummten. Herder besonders, der Sp�ter des wahren Talents, hat von den Fragmenten an den "lieblichen Dichter im Auge behalten und sich um seine Werke bem�ht. Kurz vor des Dichters Tode wurde sein Interesse neu erregt durch Knebel, welcher noch als preussischer Offizier in Potsdam einen Einzeldruck der "m�dcheninsel (nach der gleichfalls unrechtm�ssigen Ausgabe in C. H. Schmids "anthologie der Deutschen III, 297, mit einigen Verbesserungen) veranstaltet und dem grossen Friedrich in die H�nde gespielt hatte (vergl. Deutsche Litteraturdenkmale 16, VIII, wo meh rere kleine Ungenauigkeiten). Knebels Besuch in der versteckten Heimat der "\vinterburger Nachtigall, uber den er am 11. September 1780 an Caroline Herder be richtet (von und an Herder 3, hatte in Herder den Wunsch einer direkten Ann�herung an den ein samen Dichter und Amtsgenossen erweckt; wenige Tage sp�ter schickt er an G�tz die "briefe das Studium der Theologie betretiend, in die er drei versteckte Gedichte desselben eingeruckt hatte (werke, Suphan 10, 224. Und bittet ihn in herrlichen Worten um sein Zutrauen, seine Freundschaft und Anteil an seiner Dichtung (faksimiliert in Fr. G�tz, Geliebte Schatten, ungenau abgedrucktheih. Hahn, J. N. G�tz. Th. I. Birken felder Progr. 1889 S. Herder blieb ohne eine erst beabsichtigte Antwort von dem hypochondriscben Einsiedler (von und an Herder aber die 47 kleinen Gedichte, welche G�tz am 31. Oktober 1780 an Knebel �bersandte, unter der Bedingung, von diesen Reimen keinen andern Gebrauch zu machen, als sie Herder zu communiciren, (nach dem Original im Besitz von R. Brockhaus gedruckt in meinen Briefen von und an G�tz, Wolfenb�ttel 1893 S. 109) machten ihn nur nach mehr begierig. In den "carlsruher Befir�gen st�sst er unter vielem \vust auf St�cke, die er f�r G�tzisch h�lt, und fordert Knebel auf, sie mit seinemsp�renden Sinne zu durchlaufen (knebele Nachlass 2, Seine Bem�hungen blieben vergeblich. G�tz starb am 4. November 1781, ohne die zu Ramlers Gunsten getroffenen Bestimmungen �ber seinen Nach lass ge�ndert zu haben, und die Hoffnungen, welche Knebel auf eine Erwerbung seiner Papiere und B�cher gesetzt hatte, zerschlugen sich. Das Ger�cht, dass Ramler zum Herausgeber eingesetzt sei, wurde bald verbreitet, und nochmals wandte sich, angeblich "im Namen einiger ihm genau bekannter eifriger Freunde und Verehrer des Sel. G�tze und seiner Muse, wie es scheint aber im Auftrage des Herzogs Karl August (vergl. Von und an Herder l, Wieland am 28. Juli 1784 an Christian Friedrich Schwan, den Schwiegervater von G�tzens Sohne, um von letzterem die k�ufliche Ueber lassung der von seinem Vater ererbten Papiere zu er langen (faksimile ia den Geliebten Schatten). Auch dieser Schritt blieb erfolglos; der j�ngere Gotz hatte bereits am 15. November 1782 die Manuskripte, von denen Ramler bereits 687 St�cke besass, an den Heraus geber abgeschickt, und die Weimarer Freunde mussten in Goeckingks "journal von und f�r Deutschland 1784, St�ck 6, S. 625 die Ank�ndigung der Ramlaschen Aus gabe lesen. "\vir werden wenig Freude daran erleben, klagt Knebel (5. Mai 1785, von und an Herder 3, 21) "hamler soll �berall benagt und verdorben haben. Aehnliche Bef�rchtungen �usserten G�tzens alte Fre Gleim und uz. Ersterer beabsichtigte schon auf Kunde von G�tzens Tode hin, die St�cke zusammen drucken zu lassen, die in den Museualmanachen und sonst zerstreut waren (briefe zwischen Gleim, H einse und J. V. M�ller II, und Uz schreibt an Gleim (anspach, 23. M�rz 1785, ungedruckt): "auf G�tzens Gedichte freue und f�rchte ich mich: wenn seine an genehme Nachl�ssigkeit im Ausdrucke weggeschliffen wird, 0 wehe!
