Die hier versammelten Essays des ungarischen Literaturhistorikers, -kritikers und Romanciers Antal Szerb erschienen 1946 unter dem Titel Gondolatok a konyvtarban, Gedanken in der Bibliothek. Und in der Bibliothek, Szerbs liebstem Aufenthaltsort, entstanden denn auch diese, von Andras Horn erstmals ins Deutsche ubertragenen literarisch-literaturhistorischen Portrats. Doch fur Szerb war die Literatur nicht einfach ein Studienobjekt, sondern vielmehr ein unverzichtbares Lebenselement, dem er sich, gepragt von seiner ganz personlichen Sichtweise, mit viel asthetischem und psychologischem Einfuhlungsvermogen, einer hohen Sensibilitat fur Nuancen sowie einer tiefen Humanitat widmete. Fur Szerb verkorperte (gute) Literatur eine Exemplifizierung der Ewigkeit, ihre Gultigkeit war fur ihn von gesamtmenschlicher, uberhistorischer Relevanz. Sein Begriff der Weltliteratur umfasste nur die Besten, will heissen: nur jene Werke, die uber Jahrhunderte und Landesgrenzen hinweg Bestand hatten. Der vorliegende Band vereinigt sieben Essays, in denen sich Szerb mit den unterschiedlichen Literaturen Europas befasst: mit den Werken von Stefan George, Baldassare Castiglione, Henrik Ibsen, William Blake, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Miguel de Cervantes und Nikolaj Gogol. All jene, die mit den Romanen, Novellen und Erzahlungen Antal Szerbs vertraut sind, werden in seinen Essays neue und bereichernde Leseerfahrungen machen, wahrend alle anderen die Moglichkeit erhalten, einen europaischen Geist von Weltformat zu entdecken.
About the Author: Der Autor Antal Szerb, 1901 in Budapest geboren, wuchs in einer zum Katholizismus konvertierten Familie auf. Nachdem er an der dortigen Universitat zuerst ungarische und deutsche, danach auch englische Philologie studiert hatte (1924 Promotion, spater Privatdozentur), hielt er sich zu Forschungszwecken langere Zeit in Frankreich (Paris), Italien und Grossbritannien (London) auf. Neben mehreren literaturgeschichtlichen Werken schuf Szerb ein umfangreiches episches und essayistisches OEuvre. Er gehort zu den meistgelesenen Autoren Ungarns. Trotz Taufe, einer streng christlichen Lebensweise und des Besuchs eines kirchlichen Gymnasiums wurde Szerb nach dem sogenannten Zweiten Ungarischen Judengesetz von 1939 als Jude eingestuft und musste den gelben Stern tragen. 1943 zog man ihn ein erstes, ein Jahr spater ein zweites Mal zum Arbeitsdienst ein. Im Januar 1945, geschwacht und entkraftet von den Strapazen dieser Einsatze, wurde Szerb von ungarischen Militarwachen mit dem Kolben ihrer Gewehre erschlagen.
