Zeffiro Ciuffoletti analizza a tutto tondo la personalita di Garibaldi, capace di affascinare migliaia di persone, di trascinare con se i volontari, di riempire le piazze e le colonne dei giornali europei piu diffusi dell'epoca, di incuriosire fotografi, reporter, scrittori e pittori, fino a trasformarsi in un simbolo della patria. Giuseppe Monsagrati si interroga su cosa rimanga ancora da studiare in questo periodo della storia d'Italia, con quali strumenti concettuali e con quali fonti. Simone Visciola, partendo dal discorso sulle nuove identita e i nuovi linguaggi della politica nati nell'Ottocento, analizza un nodo storiografico da cui si diramano molte altre problematiche, apre la pagina del volontariato risorgimentale e dei rapporti di questo con il "mito" di Garibaldi, con un'attenzione particolare al ruolo dell'eroe come "catalizzatore" nei confronti della partecipazione giovanile alle battaglie del Risorgimento. Jerome Grevy approfondisce l'immagine di Garibaldi innamorato, interrogandosi sui significati, le finalita e le forme dei miti. Le vicende amorose, prese come pretesto di molte costruzioni retoriche, anche opposte, per dimostrare il coraggio, l'umanita dell'eroe o per creare un antimito ingenuo e mediocre, sono oggetto del contributo di Chiara Pasquinelli che apre una finestra sulla "tanto chiacchierata" vita privata dell'eroe. L'obiettivo del contributo e quello di dare rilievo all'importanza delle figure femminili che costellarono la vita dell'eroe dei due mondi. Cosimo Ceccuti approfondisce il ruolo della Toscana nella genesi del mito garibaldino. Alessandra Frontani si sofferma sull'influenza della stampa nel processo di divulgazione delle imprese garibaldine e di formazione dell'immaginario che accompagna Garibaldi e le vicende che lo vedono protagonista, analizzando in particolare l'apparato illustrativo della stampa satirico-umoristica toscana. Il saggio di Danilo Barsanti ripercorre con dovizia di particolari alcuni esempi della nutrita memorialistica garibaldina in Toscana, ossia i libri di Eugenio Checchi, Ettore Socci, Guelfo Guelfi e Giuseppe Bandi. Con Fulvio Conti si apre, invece, il capitolo dell'esperienza massonica di Garibaldi. Conclude il volume l'ampio saggio di Ivano Tognarini dedicato alla storia della citta di Piombino negli anni del Risorgimento.
