About the Book

Further Than Yesterday documents the result of a split second, a single moment. The time it took to make a decision that changed a Naval Aviator's life and sent him down a path he never imagined. That path lead to a personal hell that tried to claim his life during a horrible journey struggling with the complexities of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Fortunately, the decision to continue was made, helped by one courageous four-legged service dog. Follow the descent into hell and then The Long Walk to Sanity and the service dog program called "Paws Fur Thought". One Yellow Lab named Thai was there every step, helping the transition from Despair and Depression to Hope and Optimism. Thai and other service dogs like her have changed the landscape of the battlefield of PTSD and Mental Health.
About the Author: Cous was raised in Marmora, Ontario and attended High school in Belleville, Ontario. Cous joined the military in 1979 and graduated from the Royal Military College in 1983, majoring in Honours English with a minor in Varsity Football. After RMC, Cous trained in Winnipeg, received his wings as an Air Navigator, and was posted to HS443 Squadron at CFB Shearwater. Upon completion of his Operational Training he spent time aboard Her Majesties Ship's Iroquois, Huron, Nipigon, and Ottawa. In the fall of 1986, as a member of the Air detachment of HMCS Nipigon, Cous was one player in a dramatic Air Sea Rescue that saw him awarded Canada's Second Highest Award for Bravery, The Star of Courage. The Rescue was also the catalyst for his near three decades long struggle with PTSD that almost claimed his life on several occasions. Thankfully, he was paired with Thai, his PTSD Service Dog in Concordia Kansas in the summer of 2012. From there, due to the dramatic changes in his life, and the desire to help other similarly-afflicted people, he undertook the Long Walk to Sanity, a fifty day epic walk covering 1,065 kilometers with Thai to raise the bar of Service Dog awareness for Veterans. Along with his wife, Jocelyn, he co-founded Paws Fur Thought, an initiative that fund raises to help Veterans and First Responders obtain PTSD Service Dogs. Two years later, Thai once again became the spark and the fire that is "Further Than Yesterday, That's All That Counts" was started. Cous has been awarded a Mental Health Inspiring Lives award and the PetLynx Urban Animal Innovator of the Year. When not busy writing and delivering motivational speeches, Cous can be found reading, traveling, studying history, fishing, listening to music, and walking his dog at the beach. Cous also shares the house with his wife, her Service Dog, several cats, and their grown daughter Jennifer when she is in the area.
