About the Book

About the Book: The primary scope of this text-book covers the transmission as well as reflection optics of minerals and the methods of their studies. To explain the optical behaviour of minerals, some relevant concepts in spectroscopy have been introduced. This book fills the need of the students to a better understanding of the physical nature of minerals through studies in ir-visible-X-ray region. This book contains seven chapters titled as: General Optics: Interactions of Light with Matter, Study in Polarised Light, Optical (Absorption) Sepctroscopic Studies of Minerals, Reflection Optics, Reflection Spectroscopy, Vibrational Spectroscopy: Infrared and Raman - An Outline, X-ray Optics. It also offers as appendices the transmission, reflection properties and X-ray data of minerals. This is the only book that lucidly introduces the principles of modern methods of mineral optics in a single volume for the students of graduate and post-graduate levels. About the Author: Prof. Sachinath Mitra, born at Jessore, Bangladesh in 1938, has been teaching at Jadavpur University since April 1, 1960 and is now widely known for his multidisiciplinary activities related to earth sciences. He has a chequered career with many distinctions. He was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship, U.K. (1961-62); Nuffield Foundation Fellowship U.K. (1967-68); Deutsche Forschungs Gemeinschaft (1968-69); UNESCO Fellowship (1980-81) and carried out research as a Visiting Scientist at Imperial College of Science and Technology, London; Durham University; Heidelberg University; Technical University (Berlin); NASA Johnson Space Centre, Lunar and Planetary Institute (Houston); Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston); and Bayreath Geoinstitute (Germany).Prof. Mitra has delivered paid lectures at different Institutions in Europe and Asia, viz., CNRS-BRGM, Orleans; CERN, Geneva; Moscow State University; Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay; Munich University; Technical University, Berlin; Greenland Geological Survey, Copenhagen. In 1975, Prof. Mitra served Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay as a Visiting Professor attached to the Health Physics Division, where he induced studies on the thermoluminescence of minerals. As a UGC Visiting Professor he delivered in 1988 a course of lectures on Applied Mossbauer Spectroscopy at the Department of Physics, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu. An outcome of these lectures is the celebrated book "Applied Mossbauer Spectroscopy", Pergman Press, Oxford.Prof. Mitra has a wide range of publications, of which about hundred are related to geosciences. His other book on "Mercury in the Ecosystem" has been acclaimed highly by the environmentalists the world over. In persuance of his queer career he participated in the formulation of the Fourth Five Year Plan of the Govt. of India as the Joint Director, Planning Commission (1969-70), which he resigned from in response to his inner call to serve science and society in a broad way. Contents: General Optics: Interactions of Light with Matter Study in Polarised Light Optical (Absorption) Spectroscopic Studies of Minerals Reflection Optics Reflection Spectroscopy Vibrational Spectroscopy: Infrared and Raman -An Outline X-ray Optics Appendices.
