About the Book

Federico Pérez Carbó es una figura emblemática de la República Cubana. Sus actividades revolucionarias datan desde las campañas militares contra la Corona Española hasta casi el comienzo de la revolución del 1959. Coordinó la mayoría de las decisivas expediciones que suministraban armas, suministros y personal al Ejército Libertador. Fue miembro del Partido Revolucionario Cubano que promulgaba integración racial entre los cubanos mientras sus expediciones eran organizadas en un estado de segregación racial, la Florida. Finalizada la Guerra de Independencia (también conocida como la Guerra Hispanoamericana) fue electo gobernador de la provincia de Oriente. Renunció a este cargo durante la segunda intervención militar estadounidense. Fue custodio la de memoria institucional sobre la creación de la República. Mantuvo un valioso diario de sus experiencias, guardó copias de su correspondencia, muchas de la cuales provinieron de los presidentes de la República, y participó de manera activa en preservar el entorno histórico de la provincia de Oriente, aun después de abandonar la gobernación. Al cumplir 83 años fundó una importante revista Acción Ciudadana, en donde se publicaban artículos sobre los esfuerzos para crear la república independiente de Cuba.

Es autor y coeditor de Puerto Rico en la Segunda Guerra Mundial: El Escenario Regional (San Juan: Ediciones Callejón, 2015), Island at War: Puerto Rico in the crucible of the Second World War (Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 2015), Puerto Rico en la Segunda Guerra Mundial: Baluarte del Caribe (San Juan: Ediciones Callejón, 2012), autor de Guerra, banca y desarrollo: el Banco de Fomento y la industrialización de Puerto Rico (San Juan: Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín y el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, 2012), coautor de Battleship Vieques: Puerto Rico from World War II to the Korean War (New York: Marcus Wiener Publishers, 2011), y contribuyente de Navegando contra viento y marea. El historia de la Asociación de Industriales de Puerto Rico 1928-2014 (Humacao: Model Offset Printing, 2014). Battleship Vieques fue laureado en el 2011 por la insigne revista Choice como Distinguished Academic Title. Island at War recibió el mismo distintivo en el 2015.
