About the Book

English summary: Since their appearance, Goethes "Venetian Epigrams" have triggered misunderstandings and disconcertment--a situation which has lasted to the present. For this reason, the cycle offers an opportunity to examine, along with the work itself, aspects from the work-history and biographic contexts, which have not received much attention until now. Against the background of Goethe's second Venetian period, reconstructed from unknown sources, the cycle here subjects to extensive analysis for the first time. Goethe's orientation to the late-Latin example of Martial finds its expression in couplets about politics and religion, eroticism and sexuality, whose radical nature is difficult to integrate with the standard picture of Goethe. A central motif presents Venice as a "great city," which Goethe had already presented in a series of typical features. Therefore, the cycle represents an early form of a "great city poem," which in the epigram finds the lyrical form in order to express in exquisite couplets the punctual, fragmentary and, rough features of his perception of the city.
