Die seit Jahren steigende Bedeutung des Dienstleistungssektors beeinflusst die wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen für Industriegüterunternehmen in zunehmendem Maße. Auslöser dafür sind fehlende Wachstumspotenziale sowie internationaler Wettbewerbsdruck in verschiedensten Branchen aufgrund der Diskrepanz zwischen überwiegend homogenisierten Produkten und individuell steigenden Kundenbedürfnissen. Preis und Produkt als ursprünglich bedeutende, abgrenzende Merkmale zur Konkurrenz, bieten dabei kaum noch Potenzial zur Generierung von Wettbewerbsvorteilen. Als Resultat dieser Erkenntnisse setzen Unternehmen durch die Kombination von Produkten und Dienstleistungen vermehrt auf die Schaffung sogenannter "Kundenlösungen", um der Konsequenz einer schwindenden Profitabilität aufgrund abnehmender Margen und zunehmenden Preisdrucks entgegenzuwirken, was schließlich in der Konsequenz folgender Aussage resultiert: "Competing through services is no longer limited to service companies" (Gebauer et al., 2012, S. 120).
