About the Book

Being an Academic Rock Star isn't just about getting decent grades. In fact, there are many people who pass all their classes and they'll never be a rock star anything, personally or professionally. They lack the mind set and behaviors to be above average. As instructor Catherine Goggia teaches, being an Academic Rock Star embraces belief systems and action plans that enable students to establish habits of excellence. Some people attain segments of these behaviors because of personality, others through their upbringing, and some apply learning from successful people. However, rare is the student who shows up on the first day of class with these 30 Tips firmly anchored as their natural state of being. That requires teaching and practice. First, Catherine provides each tip clearly stated as the title of every chapter in the book. Then she explains why the tip is important, offers practical steps you can take to achieve the goal, and closes each section with an action plan. This book is set up like a work book, balancing concepts with planning and action steps. This content is also available as a Udemy course: 3 HOURS of audio lecture for people who want to hear Catherine discuss the tips in addition to reading about them. This orientation has already helped thousands of people in these categories: 1. High school students transitioning to college. Note to parents: read this book while your child is in high school and support application of these tips before the big move! 2. People who have been home raising children and are re-entering the academic world after years away. 3. People faced with a major life change, going to college to gain new skills with the goal of a career re-direct. You will read your way through this college orientation and learn about the successes and failures of students who heeded and ignored these instructions. The book is filled with information focused on your college experience, but will also help you succeed in personal and professional endeavors. If you are ready, this book will help you create a foundational experience, the benefits of which can assist you for a lifetime. When purchasing a book about student success, you have many options, so I want to be clear about what this book IS and IS NOT. Student success is a specified area of study in higher education. Academics in this field may provide data based on a variety of studies and focus groups. Some of those authors may have teaching experience, some may not. I am not claiming to offer ground-breaking data on student success, nor was this my specified area of study. I am simply offering information students in my classes found useful. I taught Business Communication, Business English, Communication Skills for the Work Place, Team Building, Conflict Resolution, and Attitude Management. The content in this book is based on what my students told me was most useful for them. Since this content helped my students, maybe it can help you too, or the students you know. After teaching for 15 years, I was compelled to offer these tips in a book as part of my goal to connect with people on a broader scale. Every instructor has his/her own style. You may find some instructors agree with my approach and some may not. I encourage you to be open to a variety of approaches and practice the methods most useful for you. Don't make the mistake of thinking you already know everything there is to know about being an Academic Rock Star. You will learn what you are open to learning, and you will surely learn AT LEAST ONE THING you can apply immediately - which makes this book worth having. We believe you'll be able to apply several tips, and encourage you to tackle them one tip at a time. Website: http: //www.relatableleader.com/ So let's get started!
