Nietzsche spricht immer wieder von der grossen 'Aufgabe' seines Lebens. Diese lasst sich spatestens seit der Zarathustra-Zeit als Umwertung aller Werte benennen. Nietzsche verfolgte lange die Absicht, ein 'Hauptwerk' zu diesem Thema zu verfassen. Im ersten Teil seines Buches geht Reto Winteler der Frage nach, warum Nietzsche dieses Unterfangen dann mit dem Antichrist plotzlich als vollendet betrachtete und argumentiert dabei gegen die etablierte These, wonach Nietzsches Werk unvollendet und er an seiner philosophischen 'Aufgabe' gescheitert sei. Im Zentrum des zweiten Teils steht Zarathustra, in dem sich nach Winteler Nietzsches grosse Aufgabe am deutlichsten herauskristallisiert. Nietzsche selber kommt hier als Vollender jenes Zarathustra-Werkes in den Blick, zu dem sein Protagonist am Ende der Dichtung erst reif geworden ist. Gegen die an der These vom Tod des Autors orientierte Forschung, wonach Zarathustra nicht mit seinem Erfinder zu verwechseln sei, betont Winteler, dass Nietzsches 'Sohn Zarathustra' seinen Autor selbst zu seiner entscheidenden Aufgabe ermutigen sollte. Der dritte Teil widmet sich dem letzten Jahr im Leben des Philosophen. Wahrend man diesen 'letzten' Nietzsche bisher immer von hinten, seinem Ende im Wahnsinn, her gelesen hat, geht es Winteler in einer subtilen Analyse von Briefen und Werken darum, Nietzsche bis zuletzt aus seinem Denken heraus zu verstehen. Der vierte und letzte Teil enthalt eine Interpretation von Nietzsches letztem Werk, den DionysosDithyramben. Da sich in ihnen jenes tragische Pathos konzentriert, das den 'ganzen' Nietzsche auszeichnet, konnen die Dithyramben als eine Art Kulminationspunkt seines Denkens und Lebens betrachtet werden. Vor allem aber sind diese Lieder Zarathustras unentbehrlich zum Verstandnis des letzten Abschnitts dieses exemplarischen philosophischen Lebens. Aus dem Inhalt 1.
