Personliche Neigung hat mich auf das Gebiet der altdeutschen Malerei gefuhrt; auf das Sondergebiet der uln1er'schule aber die Wahrnehmung, dass hier noch ein brachaliegendes Feld zu be ackem sei. Von Ulm aus habe ich gleichsam einen Abstecher nach dem benachbarten Nordlingen unternommen und ubergebe hiermit eine kurze Untersuchung uber den Nordlinger Maler Fried rich Herlin der 0efi'entlichkeit, wahrend ich eine grossere Arbeit uber die Ulmer Tafelmaler des 15. Jahrhunderts hoffentlich bald nachfolgen lassen kann. Das Material dazu habe ich bereits teil weise beisammen. Die vorliegende Abhandlung ist naturlich ihrem Gegenstand entsprechend vorwiegend stilkritischer Art. Die Fragen: "herlin oder nicht Herlin? Und: 'welche Zeit haben mich vorzugsweise beschaftigt. Dabei habe ich mog lichste Vollstandigkeit angestrebt und alle Bilder besprochen, von denen mir bekannt geworden ist, dass man sie mit Berlin in Zusammenhang gebracht hat. Jene Fragen sind aber nicht immer leicht zu beantworten. Es lasst sich namlich nicht leugnen, dass es noch keine vollig sichere Methode kunstgeschichtlicher Forsch ung gibt. Je alter man wird, je mehr man mit Vertretern der exakten Wissenschaften verkehrt, je ernster man es mit der Kunstgeschichte meint und je strenger man gegen sich selbst ist, umso mehr muss man unter jener Unsicherheit leiden. In dieser Not ergreift man gern die treue Lehrer und Fuhrerhand, die uns Morelli entgegenstreckt. Doch auch Morelli war, wie bedeutende Manner haufig, einseitig Wenn er, der feinsinnige Mensch, auch gewiss an seinen geliebten Bildern nicht nur Ohren und Hande wahrgenommen hat, so hat er doch die Wichtigkeit der Form von Hand und Ohr fur die Erkenntnis des Malers entschiedenubertrieben. Aber er hat uns einen Fingerzeig gegeben, einen Weg zum grundlichen Bilderstudium gewiesen. Nicht nur Hand und Ohr, nein, auch Auge und Fuss der dargestellten Menschen, auch Farbe und Holzart der Bilder, auch die Komposition und auch den Geist der kunstschopfungen mussen wir aufs grund liebste studieren und vergleichen. Kurz das Kleinste nicht fur zu gering achten, aber auch uber dem Kleinen das Grosse nicht aus dem Auge lassen. Und neben den stilkritischen Studien durfen wir, wenn unsere Arbeiten als eigentlich ge'schichtswissen schaftliche gelten sollen, auch die archivalische Forschung nicht vernachlassigen. Indessen bin ich bei der Beantwortung der Fragen nach Urheber und Zeit nicht stehen geblieben, sondern habe auch versucht, den Entwicklungsgang Heflins herauszuarbeiten und seine bescheidenen kunstlerischen Verdienste zu wurdigen.
