Dies ist der chronologisch erste von drei Bänden der I. Abteilung, in denen das Spätwerk von Engels nach dem Tode von Marx ediert wird. Er umfasst 43 Arbeiten (29 Texte im Hauptteil, 14 im Anhang), überwiegend mit politischer Publizistik. Nach Marx' Tod nutzte Engels die Publizistik, um die gemeinsam mit Marx entwickelten Ideen weiter zu verbreiten und sie angesichts konkurrierender Strömungen zu verteidigen. Einige wenige Texte behandeln Fragen aktueller Politik - das Geschehen in Russland, England und Frankreich. Für die deutsche Sozialdemokratie thematisierte Engels die Frühzeit der Bewegung und die Revolution von 1848, wobei er insbesondere die Leistung von Marx würdigte und eigene Erfahrungen einfließen ließ. Dazu gehören der Aufsatz "Zur Geschichte des Bundes der Kommunisten" sowie die erstmals in einer Engels-Edition veröffentlichte Rezension von Kautsky zu Georg Adlers "Geschichte der ersten sozialpolitischen Arbeiterbewegung in Deutschland", von der ein Exemplar mit Bemerkungen von Engels sowie briefliche Hinweise überliefert sind. Für die von Engels beabsichtigte Neubearbeitung seiner Schrift "Der deutsche Bauernkrieg" enthält der Band Gliederungspunkte und Notizen für die Einleitung sowie einen ausgearbeiteten Teil derselben. Zu den theoriegeschichtlichen Untersuchungen gehört der Aufsatz "The Book of Revelation", in dem Engels die "Offenbarung des Johannes" als wichtigste neutestamentarische Quelle für das Urchristentums untersucht, sowie "Ludwig Feuerbach und der Ausgang der klassischen deutschen Philosophie". Die entstehungsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhänge dieser wichtigen Schrift konnten im Einzelnen erschlossen werden. Als Anhang zur Separatausgabe von 1888 veröffentlichte Engels erstmals die "Feuerbach-Thesen" von Marx in einer redigierten Fassung; auch sie werden dargeboten und Unterschiede zu Marx' Fassung von 1845 ausgewiesen und analysiert. Der Verteidigung von Marx diente die Auseinandersetzung mit den staatssozialistischen Ideen von Johann Karl Rodbertus. Hierzu zählen die Revision der von Bernstein und Kautsky erarbeiteten Übersetzung von Marx' "Misère de la philosophie". Zu den von Engels revidierten Übersetzungen eigener und Marxscher Schriften gehören die französische Ausgabe des "Kommunistischen Manifests", sowie die amerikanische Ausgabe der "Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England". In diesem Band werden drei Manuskripte erstmals bzw. erstmals geschlossen veröffentlicht sowie sechs neue Artikel abgedruckt, die unter seiner Mitwirkung entstanden sind. Der Artikel "Wer zahlt den Dynamit?" erscheint erstmals in einer Engels-Edition.
