Die Mainzer Republik - beginnend mit der Eroberung der Festung und der Residenzstadt des Kurfursten, Erzbischofs und Erzkanzlers Erthal durch General Custine am 21. Oktober 1792, endend mit dem Abzug von 20.000 Revolutionssoldaten am 24.07.1793 - ist von Beginn an umstritten. In der politischen Diskussion anlasslich der Einfuhrung des Platzes der Mainzer Republik bezeichneten die Protagonisten die "Mainzer Republik" als Wiege deutscher Freiheit, als Wurzel der Demokratie in Deutschland, die auf dem ersten nach demokratischen Grundsatzen zustande gekommenen Parlament der deutschen Geschichte basierte. Auch das Werk setzt sich mit diesen Wertungen auseinander. Es stellt den Zusammenhang dar mit dem ersten Koalitionskrieg zwischen Osterreich, Preussen und ihren Verbundeten einerseits, Frankreich andererseits, mit der Kanonade von Valmy, dem Ubergang vom Verteidigungskrieg zum Befreiungskrieg fur die "unterjochten Volker", und schliesslich zum Eroberungskrieg im Rahmen der zweiten, der radikalen Phase der Revolution. In Chronik, Aufsatzen und Dokumenten zeigen sich die Ziele Frankreichs und die Interessenidentitat der deutschen Jakobiner: Revolutionierung zur Uberwindung des "ancien regime", der adligen und standischen Herrschaft; Anschluss der eroberten Gebiete an Frankreich als Ziel; Enteignung und Vertreibung als Mittel eines zunehmend autoritaren, nicht demokratisch legitimierten Systems. Die Frage: Der Rheinisch-Deutsche Nationalkonvent - Wiege der Demokratie, Ursprung des Parlamentarismus wird ebenso verneint wie die Frage nach der "liberalen" Anfangsphase der Mainzer Republik. Am Beispiel des bekanntesten Mitglieds des Jakobinerclubs, Georg Forster, wird der Weg der Mainzer Republik "mit Pathos und Gewalt" in die frankische Freiheit dargestellt. Beschrieben wird, wie eine jakobinische Minderheit, von hochfliegenden Ideen erfullt, glaubte, das Recht zu haben, die "ruckstandige Bevolkerung" ohne Rucksicht und mit Gewalt zu ihrem angeblichen Glucke zwingen zu durfen. Deutlich ist die Frage, die im letzten Satz aufgeworfen wird: Staaten, die andere Volker unterjochen, revolutionare Minderheiten, die unter dem Schutz auslandischer Bajonette in einem zunehmend totalitaren System Menschen zu ihrem Gluck zwingen wollen - durfen die Ehrenplatze erhalten?
