Die vorliegende Arbeit beschaftigt sich mit den symbolistischen Werken des polnischen Kunstlers Jacek Malczewski (1854-1929) wobei in deren Mittelpunkt Malczewskis kunstlerische Auffassung des Motivs Frau vor dem Hintergrund der gesellschaftlichen Problematik und ihrer Widerspiegelung in der Kunst steht. Es wird versucht diverse Analogien in der kunstlerischen Auffassung dieses Sujets im Westen herzustellen, wobei dadurch keinesfalls eine epigonenhafte Abhangigkeit der Kunst Malczewskis von dem westeuropaischen Verstandnis des Sujets demonstriert werden soll, sondern vielmehr sein Selbstverstandnis als Europaer und Kunstler zum Ausdruck gebracht werden. In seinen mythologisch gepragten Kompositionen der symbolistischen Phase, die den Kern der vorliegenden Arbeit bilden, setzte sich Malczewski mit der Geschlechterproblematik auseinander, wobei er das Weibliche in den Gestalten einer Chimare, eines Todesengels, einer Harpyie oder einer Meduse erscheinen lasst. Manchmal evozieren diese Gestalten Erotik und vermitteln den Eindruck von Ubermut oder Derbheit, welche sich mit einem Hauch von Scherzhaftigkeit paart. Malczewskis Verstandnis von Erotik hat wenig gemeinsam mit den erotischen Wahrnehmungen der Kunstler in Polen oder im Westen Europas - z.B. mit T.-Lautrec, G. Courbet, E. Schiele oder W. Podkowi. Primar haftet diesen erotischen Gestalten das Element einer erschreckenden physischen Prasenz und einer dionysischen Vitalitat an1, eingetaucht in die Schonheit der romantischen Landschaft Polens. Aus der Gegenuberstellung mit den Werken westeuropaischer Kunstler wird deutlich, dass die weiblichen Gestalten von Malczewski anders als die Odalisken eines Ingres nur bedingt als Objekte der mannlichen Begierde aufzufassen sind, wenngleich sie im Rahmen der akuten Geschlechterproblematik des Frauenbildes im 19. Jahrhundert durchaus eine tragende Rolle haben. Sie sind weitaus zuruckhaltender und schamhafter, was aus ihrer Funktion innerhalb der Werke und aus Malczewskis Verstandnis der Weiblichkeit resultiert. Fur die Werkanalyse wurden aus der Fulle an Material die interessantesten Kompositionen ausgewahlt, die wahrend der symbolistischen Phase, also ab 1890, geschaffen wurden. Fruher entstandene Werke werden nur erwahnt, soweit dies erforderlich ist. Die Kompositionen werden thematisch behandelt und moglichst systematisch nach dem Zeitpunkt ihrer Entstehung analysiert. Die einzelnen Werkgruppen sind: Sirenen- und Medusendarstellungen, Selbstportrats des Kunstlers, Muse und Chimare, Kunstler und Chimare, Poloniadarstellungen, Zyklus "Thanatos " sowie Zyklus "Vergifteter Brunnen " . Daruber hinaus befasst sich die Arbeit mit dem Symbolismus der Epoche des "Jungen Polen ," ansatzweise auch mit der Malerei der Romantik, die jenem vorausgegangen ist, mit dem historischen Hintergrund, d.h. der politischen Situation in Polen sowie den gesellschaftlich-kulturellen Aspekten, die fur das Verstandnis dieser Werke von entscheidender Bedeutung sind.
