In Familien mit behinderten Kindern kreuzen sich Entwicklungen sozialen Wandels, die besonderes Konfliktpotential fur die Rolle der Mutter in sich bergen. Diese Entwicklungen beinhalten zum einen die Individualisierung und Modernisierung des weiblichen Lebenslaufs, die durch die zunehmende Wahlfreiheit von Frauen bei der Planung ihres Lebens- und Berufsverlaufs gepragt sind. Zum anderen umfassen sie die Normalisierung der kindlichen Lebensbedingungen in Familien mit einem behinderten Kind, d.h. Heim-"Karrieren" werden fur Kinder mit Behinderungen heute glucklicherweise meistens vermieden, die meisten von ihnen wachsen wie andere Kinder auch bei ihren Eltern oder zumindest bei ihrer Mutter auf. Zwischen 525 Tausend und 875 Tausend Kinder und Jugendliche in Deutschland leben mit einer Behinderung; eine Zahl, die die quantitative Relevanz des vorgestellten Themas fur die Familienforschung unterstreicht. Die vorliegende Arbeit richtet ihr Augenmerk auf die Mutter dieser Kinder mit Behinderungen, und zwar auf ihre familiale und berufliche Situation. Generell stellt sich fur alle Frauen die Vereinbarkeit der Lebensbereiche Kind(er) und Beruf als schwierig dar, was aus der Familien- und Frauenforschung hinlanglich bekannt ist. Diese Vereinbarkeitsproblematik der Mutter scheint in Familien, in denen ein behindertes Kind lebt, jedoch von noch starkerer Brisanz zu sein. Bisherige Forschungen deuten darauf hin, dass die Mutter behinderter Kinder seltener erwerbstatig sind als die Mutter nicht-behinderter Kinder. Zudem wird bei Kindern mit Behinderungen ein allgemein erhohter Bedarf an Pflege, Betreuung und Forderung vermutet und es scheinen vor allem die Mutter zu sein, die diese Betreuungs- und Pflegeaufgaben ubernehmen. Hinreichend empirisch belegt waren diese Thesen bisher jedoch nicht. Zudem fehlten auch gesicherte Daten daruber, wie die Mutter ihre Situation bewerten und ob sie selbst glauben, aufgrund der Behinderung ihres Kindes uber eingeschrankte individuelle Wahlmoglichkeiten im Berufs- und Erwerbsbereich zu verfugen. Diesen Fragen geht die vorliegende Arbeit nach und stellt ihre Ergebnisse auf eine breite empirische Grundlage von knapp 1000 befragten Muttern aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet.
