Der vorliegende Band präsentiert Briefe aus dem Nachlaß des Literaturhistorikers und Schwabinger Originals Carl Georg von Maassen, der nicht nur eine umfassende Bibliothek der deutschen Romantik zusammentrug, sondern auch eine historisch-kritische, kommentierte Ausgabe der Werke des Dichters E. T. A. Hoffmann veröffentlichte, Schriften weiterer Romantiker in einer Schriftenreihe Bibliothek der neuen Serapionsbrüder versammelte und den bedeutenden Roman Hermann und Dorothea von Johann Carl Wezel neu entdeckte. Aus seinem Nachlaß werden hier Briefe des literarischen Tausendsassas Franz Blei (dazu ein Exkurs über Bleis Fleurettens Purpurschnecke mit den gerühmten Illustrationen des Marquis von Bayros sowie einige Briefe von Blei an Gerhart Hauptmann) sowie des Bibliographen, Literaturhistorikers und Genealogen Hans von Müller erstmals veröffentlicht. Das zentrale Thema ist dabei E. T. A. Hoffmann, denn Müller lieferte viele Bausteine zu einer Biographie Hoffmanns und entdeckte und veröffentlichte die bis heute autoritativen Sammlungen von Briefen und Tagebüchern Hoffmanns. So bieten diese Briefe gewissermaßen eine Geschichte der Hoffmann-Forschung in den formativen Jahren 1900-1930. Mit vielen Anmerkungen, einigen farbigen Abbildungen sowie Register.
