Estas pginas revelan otra parte oculta de la insurreccin que llev a Fidel Castro al poder absoluto en 1959. Frank Pas naci y creci en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba, en un hogar lleno de amor y disciplina. Su padre era Pastor Bautista y muri cuando sus tres hijos eran muy pequeos. Los hermanos Pas fueron estudiantes brillantes y revolucionarios comprometidos.
Frank cursaba el penltimo curso de su carrera de maestro cuando se produjo el golpe de estado de Batista en 1952. Era Presidente de la Asociacin de Estudiantes. Es ah cuando pasa de lder estudiantil a revolucionario, dedicndose por entero a la causa revolucionaria, que continu cuando comenz a trabajar de maestro en una escuela Bautista.
Despus de muchos meses de reflexin, decidi fusionar su organizacin (Accin Nacional Revolucionaria), con el Movimiento 26 de Julio (M-26-7) que Fidel Castro haba fundado al salir de la crcel en 1955.
Pas muestra entonces sus cualidades como organizador y conductor. Durante muchos meses, viaj a lo largo de Cuba fundando clulas, recogiendo armas y municiones. Fund una organizacin con los miembros de la sociedad civil que llam Movimiento de Resistencia Cvica (MRe. Sus dirigentes y militantes -profesionales e industriales-lo respetaban. Visit a Castro en el exilio en Mxico para finalizar el plan para un levantamiento a fines de 1956. Le advirti a Castro que no estaban listos, pero aquel decidi seguir adelante. Frank y sus hombres se sublevaron en Cuba el 30 de noviembre, pero Castro no lleg hasta dos das despus.
Pas pasa por completo a la clandestinidad, pero fue encarcelado para ser juzgado por su participacin en el alzamiento. Desde la crcel continu su labor, enfatizando el abastecer a la incipiente guerrilla. A Pas se debe la supervivencia de la guerrilla de Castro. Despus del juicio, an en su ciudad, se convirti en el objetivo nmero uno de las fuerzas represivas. No slo reorganiz el M-26-7, sino que centraliz su Direccin Nacional en Santiago y dict una serie de medidas que aumentaron an ms sus relaciones antagnicas con Fidel Castro. Ya para esa poca, Frank Pas, y no Fidel Castro, era el jefe mximo de la Direccin Nacional del M-26-7.
A pesar de su edad, Frank mandaba y sus hombres obedecan. Su labor como dirigente estudiantil le haba permitido viajar a lo largo y ancho de la isla haciendo contactos que luego le seran de gran utilidad en la estructura de las redes clandestinas. Era un dirigente respetado y querido. Cuando apenas tena 21 aos de edad, design a cuatro profesionales de renombre para que redactaran la tesis econmica del Movimiento 26 de Julio, aceptando sin vacilaciones. Camino de la Sierra Maestra, visitaban su escondite de Santiago de Cuba distinguidos miembros de la sociedad civil cubana y extranjeros como el editorialista del New York Times Herbert L. Matthews. Lo escuchaban y respetaban militantes de otras organizaciones revolucionarias, partidos polticos tradicionales, sindicatos obreros y militares. Sus conversaciones con representantes diplomticos de los Estados Unidos produjeron un cambio radical en la poltica de ese pas hacia la dictadura de Batista y la promesa de apoyo al futuro gobierno revolucionario.
Convertido ya en la figura central del M-26-7, fue descubierto en circunstancias misteriosas y asesinado por la polica. Su funeral fue el ms grande que ha tenido lugar en su ciudad natal. Su muerte, y la de su sucesor Ren Ramos Latour, dej el camino abierto a Castro para ejercer el poder absoluto de su organizacin. La faccin totalitaria que se apoder del M-26-7 no permiti que se conociera su verdadera historia. Este libro aspira a poner fin a esa situacin.
