About the Book

Arthur Schurig (1870-1929) war ein deutscher Philologe, Archäologe, Schriftsteller und Übersetzer. Francisco Pizarro war ein spanischer Conquistador, der das Reich der Inka eroberte. Pizarro unternahm mit seinen drei Halbbrüdern und wechselnden Begleitern mehrere Erkundungsfahrten nach Mittel- und Südamerika, auf denen er vor allem nach Gold und Reichtümern suchte. Pizarro war in Spanien der Legende nach ein einfacher Schweinehirt. Ihn lockte im Zeitalter der Entdeckungen das Abenteuer in die Neue Welt. Von 1502 bis 1509 siedelte er auf der Insel Hispaniola, im Bereich des heutigen Haiti. 1510 nahm er an einer Fahrt nach Urabá teil. Im Jahr 1513 schloss er sich einer Expedition Vasco Núñez de Balboas an, die bei der Erkundung des Isthmus von Panama bis zum Pazifik vorstieß. Aus dem Buch: "Was unser Francisco bis zu seinem 32. Lebensjahre trieb, ist der Nachwelt im Einzelnen leider unbekannt. Wahrscheinlich ist er mit sechzehn oder siebzehn Jahren Soldat geworden und hat früh zu befehlen gelernt. Er war von kräftigem Körperbau, gewöhnt an Mühsal und Entbehrung. Mit Passion saß er auf einem guten Pferde, liebte das Ballspiel, schwamm wie eine Fischotter und begab sich leidenschaftlich gern in Gefahr. Vom Hazard, besonders wenn ihm die liebe Frau Fortuna ihre Rückseite zeigte, bekam man ihn nicht so leicht weg, es sei denn, Soldatenpflichten riefen ihn. Den Tafelfreuden hingegen gab er sich maßvoll hin. Auch beim Becher velor er nie seine Würde."
