Francisco. El ingenio o las delicias del campo, escrita por Anselmo Suárez y Romero, cuenta los amores de dos esclavos, Francisco y Dorotea. A continuación resumimos su argumento:


Francisco, nacido en África y traído a Cuba, es un siervo dócil y obediente. Le pide permiso a su ama doña Dolores Mendizábal para casarse con Dorotea. Sin embargo, doña Dolores se niega para favorecer los deseos de su hijo Ricardo, que quiere poseer a la esclava.

Francisco deja encinta a Dorotea, forzando así sus aspiraciones matrimoniales.

Entonces Doña Dolores, colérica ante tal acto de desobediencia, envía a Francisco a un ingenio azucarero. Allí sufre toda la dureza del trabajo esclavo, y destina a Dorotea a limpiar en casas de francesas.

Ricardo, enamorado de Dorotea y constantemente rechazado, somete a Francisco a suplicios inhumanos en el ingenio. Hasta que Dorotea se entrega para salvar a su amante de una muerte cierta, que finalmente no consigue evitar.

Francisco se ahorca. Dorotea también fallece después de su regreso a La Habana.

La novela Francisco fue la primera obra costumbrista que se atrevió a tocar el tema de la esclavitud y mostrarlo como una práctica abominable. Ello en un momento en que la mano de obra esclava constituía parte esencial de la economía cubana. La novela es relativamente breve, pero dramática en extremo, dura y conmovedora. Tiene brillantes descripciones de la sociedad cubana, de La Habana y de los ingenios azucareros.

La novela Francisco fue escrita en 1838 por impulso de Domingo del Monte, para ser entregada al delegado inglés Richard Robert Madden. Este publicó un álbum antiesclavista en Londres con textos de varios escritos cubanos. La copia que llevó Madden a Inglaterra se perdió. Más tarde, Suárez y Romero escribió un prólogo para su obra en Nueva York (1875) y su novela se publicó en 1880.

El valor de esta obra no está en su trama sentimental. Es valiosa por la descripción de la vida en los ingenios azucareros cubanos, las costumbres, cantos y ritos africanos. Por esta razón, Domingo del Monte quiso agregarle un subtítulo irónico: El ingenio o las delicias del campo.


No fue Francisco. El Ingenio o las Delicias del Campo mi primera producción literaria; pero solamente había escrito los cuadros titulados Una noche de retreta, Un viejo impertinente, Un recuerdo, y Carlota Valdés, cuando emprendí, en 1838 y acabé en 1839, aquella novela, excitado por Domingo del Monte, a quien había pedido Mr. Richard Madden algunas composiciones de escritores cubanos con objeto de saber el estado de la opinión acerca de la trata y de los esclavos, entre los jóvenes pensadores de Cuba.
