La obra pública de Francisco de Paula Castañeda tiene más de un motivo de atracción. La abundancia de interpretaciones constituye una prueba. Adolfo Saldias, analizando sus acciones públicas en el periodo de la revolución o en el rivadaviano, traza la figura del ciudadano o la del político militante. Guillermo Furlong, cree encontrar la clave interpretativa en el religioso, a sus ojos, es un símil argentino de San Pablo. Arturo Capdevila, por su lado, considera que se trata de una vida novelesca, de este modo, solo desde un discurso literario es posible conocer la profundidad del personaje. La imagen del "loco Castañeda" es el objeto de estudio de Osvaldo Loudet, quien analiza al fraile como si fuera su propio paciente, declarándolo próximo a la locura. Los actos contradictorios del franciscano, defiende o ataca, por temporadas, a centralistas y federales, han dibujado la potente imagen del sujeto contradictorio e inclasificable.Siguiendo un tono biográfico, cronológico, este libro toma como eje de análisis al fraile en su acción de hombre público. Propone que detrás de los evidentes hechos contradictorios puede encontrarse un largo hilo rojo, una lógica política que se repite en su trayectoria vital, cuyos ingredientes sobresalientes son la defensa de la religión católica como de sus miembros, la centralidad política de Buenos Aires, y la promoción de la educación.

Fabián Herrero es Doctor en Historia (UBA). Investigador de Conicet con sede en el Instituto Ravignani, (UBA). Se desempeña como Profesor titular ordinario, Universidad Autónoma de Entre Ríos. Es autor, entre otros, de Movimientos de Pueblo. La política en Buenos Aires, 1810-1820, Ediciones Cooperativas, 2007. Federalistas de Buenos Aires, 1810-1820. Sobre los orígenes de la política posrevolucionaria, UNLa, 2010.
