De acuerdo al folklor de mi pueblo hay que tocar el cadáver del novio para evitar que el muerto te lleve con él. Por eso no pude evitar que me obligaran a tocar el frío cadaver del hombre que me enseño que el amor romántico incluye sexo. No me gustan los funerales y espero que al próximo que me vea obligada a ir sea al mío...

Hasta ahora me las he arreglado para ir por la vida sin comprometerme mucho con los convenios sociales. Soy una mujer de cierta edad, sin trabajo estable, soltera y sin hijos. Después de pasarme más de 20 años trabajando en las frías noches de la ciudad de New York, regresé a mi Isla natal. Mi plan era dedicarme a escribir, bailar, envejecer con mi madre y besar sapos hasta que la vida me sorprendiera con uno que hable, o por lo menos entienda, el lenguaje de mi alma. Crear las condiciones para una vida simple y bonita era mi plan pero la vida tenía otros planes.

Una tarde gris del 2018... Mi hermana mayor, Enilda, se quedó en la casa cuidando a nuestra madre quien recientemente había recibido su 'Comfort Kit', un paquete con medicamentos, entre ellos Morfina, reservado solo para los enfermos que tienen menos de seis meses de vida. Mi hermana Mónica, quien hacía solo unos meses había sido sometida a una cirugía para extirparle un tumor maligno de su seno derecho, se estaba practicando unos exámenes para descartar la malignidad de un pequeño quiste en sus ovarios... Mientras yo me quedé en el hospital cuidando a mi sobrino Angel, hijo de Mónica. Angel, nació muy saludable pero a la edad de 11 años empezó a padecer misteriosas convulsiones que resultaron ser causadas por una malformación en las venas de su cerebro. Su condición era inoperable pero la radiación era un opción.

"Nadie está tan mal que no pueda estar peor" me dice mi cuñado Antonio a través de la cama del hospital donde Angel, su hijo, estaba conectado a una máquina de encefalogramas. Pienso que tiene razón pero no podía imaginar un peor escenario y me quedo callada para no llorar. Intentaba ser fuerte, por Angel, por mis hermanas, por mi mamá y por toda mi familia.


Mi mamá murió en el invierno del 2019. No fui a su funeral, tampoco al de mi papá quien murió 10 años antes, ni al de mi hermano Luichy quien solo tenía 17 años cuando fue arrastrado por el río un Domingo en la tarde. . . ¿ya dije que no me gustan los funerales?.

La perdida de la madre me empujo a un espacio liminal, pasé muchas noches aterrorizada vagando por los rincones de una casa llena de ausencias...Nunca imaginé que 'mi vida simple y bonita' incluiría un entrenamiento intensivo en lágrimas. Estoy aprendiendo a no evadir el inevitable dolor que implica estar vivos y en los últimos 4 años he llorado por todas las pérdidas de mi vida. Este libro es una colección de momentos, es mi intento de encasillar en palabras pequeños fragmentos de la misteriosa danza que hasta ahora ha sido mi vida.
