Spätestens seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges gelten die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, trotz eines relativen Abstiegs zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts, als mächtigste Nation unseres Planeten (vgl. Gellner/Kleiber 2007: 11). Allein die militärische Dominanz der Vereinigten Staaten, basierend auf modern ausgerüsteten Streitkräften, die weltweit und simultan agieren können, ist in der Geschichte der Menschheit beispiellos. Sie bleibt unangefochten. Doch auch auf den Gebieten Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft gehören die USA weltweit zu den führenden Nationen (vgl. Hartmann 2005: 24). Sie gelten in vielen ökonomischen Teilbereichen als Schrittmacher und als Vorbild. Hinzu kommt es durch mediale Verbreitung, insbesondere durch Film und Fernsehen der Marke Hollywood, zu einer globalen Präsenz US-amerikanischer Kultur und Werte (vgl. Singh 2003: 2), die gemeinhin auf das Attribut westlich reduziert werden. Die USA sind global bekannt, jeder Erdenbürger kennt sie, oder meint sie zumindest zu kennen, und besitzt eine Meinung in Bezug auf sie, sei sie positiver oder negativer Natur. Nirgendwo kulminiert diese Macht in den Augen zahlreicher Bürger weltweit mehr, als in der Figur des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten. Er gilt gemeinhin als zentraler Akteur innerhalb der US-amerikanischen Politik und wohl auch auf der Weltbühne. Ein Blick in die hiesigen Medien unterstreicht diesen Eindruck.
