About the Book

"Flurry is a beautiful 100 pound Great Pyrenees I adopted from the NLOL dog program. The techniques in this book were used by Barry to train Flurry. I was a little nervous about how Flurry would behave with my 11-year-old granddaughter. All my fears were laid to rest the third day Flurry was at my house. I was watching my granddaughter work with Flurry. She had Flurry get up on a stump and sit down. Then she laid a board from one stump to another stump, and had Flurry walk across the board and sit on the other stump. That was just the beginning. Flurry knows over 50 cues and she will do all of them for my granddaughter. It is amazing to watch this huge dog obey a little girl half her size for some treats. The training techniques in this book are not only very easy, but they work incredible well.""Pawley is a very pretty pointer mix I adopted from the NLOL dog program. When I met Pawley I was shocked by how well she obeyed Barry. She was trained to be a service dog, but her nervousness prevented her from getting a job. When she came up for adoption, I took a copy of her daily journal and a list that outlined all the cues Pawley knows and how to get her to do them home to my family. My children sat down and read it all. A few days later I brought Pawley home. Within two days of Pawley being at my house she was obeying all of her cues for my 14 year old daughter and 15 year old son. The techniques in this book are very easy, and they carried over from Barry to my family. I am still amazed by how well the techniques in this book work, not just for me, but for my children as well."Every dog should know how to perform the 20 cues taught in this book. The techniques are very easy and make learning fun for both you and your dog. These techniques are safe to be used by your whole family. Your dog spends more time with your children than you, so it is important he obeys them as well as he does you. Training your dog is the best thing you can do to improve your relationship with him and your family. If you take your time, your dog will know all 20 of these cues in no time. Do not get in a hurry, slower is faster when training your dog.
About the Author: Barry J. Holcomb, an inmate at Crossroads Correction Center, Cameron Missouri. Barry has been in the New Leash on Life (NLOL) dog program for a number of years. The dog program affords inmates like Barry the unique opportunity to train dogs from the local rescue shelters. The dogs that come into the NLOL program are assigned to a set of offenders. The three of them live together in the prison. From that moment on the dog stays with one of the offenders at all times. The offenders have a kennel in their cell for the dog to sleep in. The dog program is completely run on donations from the public. No Federal, State, or City tax dollars go to the dog program. The donations received allow the offenders & dogs to be provided with everything they will need for training. The dogs usually stay with the offenders for a period of thirty to ninety days. Once the dogs pass their Canine Good Citizen Test, they are put up for adoption. Some of the dogs are chosen to receive additional training to be service dogs. Barry has trained an assortment of dogs; most of which go to homes where they are lifelong pets. He has also trained dogs for Search and Rescue, comfort dogs, service dogs for people in wheelchairs & for people with other disabilities. Being in prison has given Barry the time to study an assortment of different training techniques & allowed him to watch the techniques other inmates use for training. Barry has found that the most successful methods for dog training are the reward-based techniques. The techniques in this book are what Barry uses on every dog that he trains. Over the years, Barry has learned that every dog is different; all dogs require the trainer to possess & use a different level of patience. Being in the NLOL program has given Barry the opportunity to work with everything from very aggressive, to scared & timid dogs, & everything in-between. The techniques in this book have worked on all the dogs he has worked with. The NLOL program has taught Barry that the only thing a person needs to train a dog is patience & some good treats. He tells everyone attempting to train a dog; or who takes home one of his dogs is; REMEMBER SLOWER IS ALWAYS FASTER WHEN TRAINING YOUR DOG! If you have any questions about this book or training your dog you can contact Barry at: Barry J. Holcomb 514068 C.R.C.C. 1115 E. Pence Rd Cameron Missouri 64429 Money from the sales of this book will be donated to NLOL dog program & local animal shelters.
