About the Book

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of modern electronic devices and circuits. It is suitable for adoption as the textbook for the first course in electronics found in most curricula for undergraduate physics and electronic science students. It also covers several topics of electronics being taught at the postgraduate first-year level in physics. Besides, the students pursuing degree or diploma courses in electrical, electronics and computer engineering will find this textbook useful and self-contained.

The text provides a thorough and rigorous explanation of characteristics and parameters of the most important semiconductor devices in general use today. It explains the underlying principles of how different circuits work—providing valuable insights into analysis of circuits so essential for solving design problems. Coverage includes all the basic aspects of analog and digital electronics plus several important topics such as current mirrors and their applications, amplifiers with active load, composite devices and their equivalent models and applications, op-amp mathematical and circuit modelling, and logic circuits analysis.

Key Features :

• Emphasizes underlying physics and operational characteristics of semiconductor devices

• Numerous solved examples and review questions help the students develop an intuitive grasp of the theory.

• Sufficient number of conventional and short-answer type model questions included in each chapter acquaint the students with the type of questions generally asked in examinations.About the AuthorANWAR A. KHAN is Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University since January 2006. He received his M.Sc. (1968) in physics with electronics from Patna University, and Ph.D. (1977) in electronics from Magadh University. He taught electronics to postgraduate physics students at Magadh University (1969–1978) and at Ranchi University (1978–1983, 1988–1990 and 1995–2004). He also served on the faculty at the College of Engineering, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1983–1988 and 1990–1995), and taught electronics to the undergraduate and postgraduate students of electrical engineering. His teaching and research interests include electrical sensors and devices, switched-capacitor networks, analog/digital electronics, instrumentation and measurements, computer-aided design of electronic circuits and systems, and current-mode circuits. Professor Khan has authored and co-authored over 72 scientific papers in the refereed journals of international repute and supervised Ph.D. students in electronic instrumentation, measurement and control. He is also listed in Twentieth Century Admirable Achievers: Distinguished Who’s Who. |KANCHAN K. DEY, formerly Professor, served for over forty years at the University Department of Physics, Ranchi University. He received his B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in physics in 1962, 1964 and 1983, respectively, all from Ranchi University. Over the years he has been privileged to teach physics and electronics to undergraduate and postgraduate physics students. He also supervised doctorate students in microwave electronics.
