Matrimonio proibito insieme al dottor Roland Wright e al barone Isaac Stephen Smith (in un ruolo cameo). Nessuno dei personaggi di questa storia, però, ha legami stretti con le famiglie del conte Bramby e del visconte Abbott (filo conduttore alla prima quadrilogia della saga). Inoltre l'ambiente dove si dipana il mistero è socialmente lontano da quello a cui appartengono le blasonate famiglie, anche se durante tutta la narrazione i personaggi coinvolti sfiorano frequentemente il ton e le loro vite si intrecciano a quelle dei componenti dell'alta aristocrazia londinese, pur non facendone parte.
