Filosofia del sentido comun, la plenitud del saber natural Generalmente la filosofia de Balmes es vista como la filosofia del sentido comun, cuando de hecho se trata de algo bastante mas sofisticado. Esta obra es de caracter divulgativo y se trata el tema de la certeza. Balmes descompone la verdad en tres clases irreductibles, si bien es cierto que hablamos de las mismas como si solo fueran una. Estas son las verdades racionales, las verdades subjetivas, y las verdades objetivas. La verdad subjetiva, puede ser entendida como una realidad actual y presente para el individuo, que es real pero proviene de la percepcion de la persona. Por ejemplo, afirmar que se tiene sed o que se tiene frio son verdades subjetivas. La verdad racional, es la logica y matematica. La verdad objetiva es aquella que -aunque percibida por todos- no califica dentro de la categoria de verdad racional, por ejemplo, afirmar que el cielo esta nublado, o que en el bosque hay arboles. Estos son los tres tipos de verdad irreductibles, y los metodos de captacion difieren entre si. Por ello, es necesario que la filosofia plantee en primer lugar que tipo de verdad buscamos. Para Jaime Balmes no es posible dudar de todo, haciendo afirmacion tal, no reconocemos que hay una serie de leyes del pensar que aceptamos como verdades para poder dudar. De manera similar a lo planteado por San Agustin o Descartes, asegurar que dudamos implica la certeza de que estamos dudando. Asi, tambien la duda es una certeza. De modo que es imposible un verdadeo esceptico radical, ya que no existe la duda universal. La certeza es natural e intuitiva tanto como la duda, y anterior a la filosofia. Asi, la certeza natural y comun esta engloba tambien a la certeza filosofica cartesiana. Para lograr esta certeza, son necesarios los criterios, los recursos mediante los cuales podemos acceder a la verdad. Tenemos una gran cantidad de criterios por haber, tambien, varios tipos de verdades. Pero, Balmes los divide en tres: los criterios los de evidencia, de conciencia, y los de sentido comun. Estos son los criterios para acceder a los tres tipos de verdad. Entender como filosofia del sentido comun el pensamiento de Balmes no se debe a su concepcion del sentido comun, sino especialmente por su definicion de este sentido como criterio para lograr una certeza. Llegados a este punto, es importante senalar la relacion de las verdades subjetivas con los criterios de conciencia, las verdades objetivas accesibles mediante el criterio del llamado sentido comun y las verdades racionales con los de evidencia. Balmes defiende que la metafisica no debe basarse solamente sobre una columna, sino sobre las tres que corresponden con las tres verdades: de modo que, el cogito ergo sum, el principio de conciencia cartesiano es una verdad subjetiva, y que el principio de no contradiccion de Aristoteles es verdad racional. Y finalmente, el sentido comun, el instinto intelectual es un termino mas especifico que sentido comun y nos presenta la llamada verdad objetiva. El asegura que es imposible encontrar una verdad comun a los tres principios. Asi, Balmes niega la exclusividad de las teorias de los filosofos: la filosofia es la plenitud del saber natural, y esta arraigada al ser hombre. Afirmar, por ejemplo, que el cogito es la fundamentacion de la verdad y la filosofia no es de por si una afirmacion equivocada, pues es cierto lo que afirma, pero falso lo que niega, pues ademas del cogito hay otras posibilidades de fundamentacion. Balmes no reduce esta idea solamente al ambito de la filosofia, y la extiende tambien al pensamiento humano general. De esta manera, la tesis fundamental de Balmes es que no existe una formula de la cual se pueda desprender el universo. No hay verdad de la cual surjan todas las demas. Llegados a este punto, cabe definir con mayor profundidad los tres criterios.
