Es ist eben dieser Status im Zwischenraum, im Jenseits klassischer Genrekonventionen, der den Anspruch eines Regisseurs widerspiegelt, der sich gegen eindeutige Interpretationen sträubt. Die Grenzen des Nicht-Eindeutigen, des Vieldeutigen auszuloten, sie so weit zu spannen, bis sie sich in der Bedeutungslosigkeit verlieren, so ließe sich das Programm von David Lynch formulieren. "Es [das klassische Erzählkino, Anm.LW] ist zeitlos, und ich liebe es sehr. Doch ich will seine Formen und Strukturen so weit wie möglich dehnen." (David Lynch).Die Liebe zum Kino ist Lynchs Filmen anzumerken. So sind seine Filme, selbst wenn sie sämtliche kinematographische Formeln und Regeln auf die Probe stellen, stets auch eine Hommage an das Kino und an das Medium Film, dessen vielfältige Gestaltungsmittel konsequent ausgeschöpft und ergründet werden. Diesem Umstand ist es zu verdanken, dass Lynchs Filme immer wieder als Beitrag zu einer Theorie des Films verstanden werden. Indem sie die Mechanismen des klassischen Kinos einem experimentellen Spiel aussetzen, lassen sie deren Konventionalität deutlich hervortreten und bieten alternative filmische Konzepte an. In diesem Umgang mit dem Medium Film und den Konventionen des Kinos erkennen Filmwissenschaftler oft ein dekonstruktives Verfahren. Damit wird der Blickwinkel aus einer philosophischen Perspektive eröffnet. Die Dekonstruktion ist eine im Geiste des Poststrukturalismus geborene Haltung des französischen Philosophen Jacques Derrida.
