About the Book

English summary: In his second volume of film-sermons Martin Dober seeks out the theological meaning of law in selected motion pictures in order to carry on a discourse with the gospel found in the biblical texts. This hermeneutic of stories told in contemporary movies finds its guidance in a threefold sense of law first as Tora, the good guidance of God, second of Nomos, the often fateful realities of human life, third of Jus in the forms of statute, jurisdiction and executive power. Recent movies like The White Ribbon, Away from Her, The End Is My Beginning, Tsotsi and Into the Wild have been embodied in this collection as well as classic motion pictures like Vertigo, 2001: A Space Odyssee, Rebel without a Cause, Hombre or The Shawshank Redemption. An introductory essay unfolds the meaning of law and gospel as the leading theological categories.
