Der theoretische Nachweis dafür, daß Noahs Groß- versuch zum Überleben von Mensch und Tier in einer weltweiten, die höchsten Erhebungen übersteigenden Flut überhaupt gelingen konnte. daß die Arche also jedenfalls schwimmfähig gewesen sein mußte. konnte -wie so häufig in Wissen- schafts-und Technikgeschichte - erst später, nämlich etwa 1000 Jahre danach, geführt werden. Der bedeutendste antike Mathematiker und Physiker, derGrieche Arehirnedes (287-212 v. ChrJ. entdeckte der Überlieferung nach mit dem bekann- ten Ausruf "Heureka" Cich hab's gefunden) das nach ihm benannte Prinzip, nach dem ein Schwimmkörper nicht schwerer sein darf als die von ihm verdrängte Flüssigkeitsrnenge. Arehirnedes war auch der erste Wissenschaftler, der im Rahmen seiner Bemühun- gen um die Quadratur des Kreises die Finite-Element-Methode mit Erfolg anwen- dete. Seine Berechnung der unteren Grenze 3 für die Zahln beruht auf der Ein- teilung des Kreisinnern in 96 gleiche sektorielle Dreieckselernente. Da er diese Grenze über den Umfang des so einbeschriebenen regelmäßigen Polygons ermit- telte, handelt es sich eigentlich um eine Anwendung der Boundary-Elernent-Me- thode. Hierbei kann die erzielbare Genauigkeit noch durch die einfache An- schauung abgeschätzt werden. Vorsicht geboten ist jedoch beim kritiklosen Ein- satz von Finite-Element-Programmen bei der Strukturanalyse.
