Der Schwerpunkt dieser empirischen Untersuchung liegt auf den verbalen sowie verschriftlichten Ergebnissen der Schülerinnen und Schüler. Die Grundschule legt durch das Aufnehmen von frühen mathematischen Alltagserfahrungen der Kinder und das Entwickeln allgemeiner Kompetenzen eine Basis für das Mathematiklernen. Dabei wird der weitere Bildungsverlauf an die Erkenntnisse der Schülerinnen und Schüler aus der Primarstufe angeschlossen. Die Entwicklung der Kompetenzen und Erfahrungen sorgt für eine lebenslange Auseinandersetzung mit der Mathematik im Alltag. Dabei sind Realitätsbezüge in der Mathematik historisch betrachtet keine Neuheit. Konkrete und alltagsrelevante Fragestellungen der außermathematischen Umwelt führten letztendlich zu einer innermathematischen, abstrahierten Form der Mathematik, wie wir sie heute kennen. Ein zentrales Thema des Mathematikunterrichts ist im Bereich des Sachrechnens das mathematische Modellieren, welches innerhalb der nationalen deutschen Bildungsstandards für Grundschulen als eine von fünf Kompetenzen beschrieben wird. Das Modellieren beinhaltet das Strukturieren, Mathematisieren und Interpretieren. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler sollen digitale Werkzeuge und ihre mathematischen Kompetenzen nutzen, um an einer konkreten lebenswirklichen Aufgabenstellung zu arbeiten. Dabei sollen Sachsituationen erfasst und in ein mathematisches Modell übertragen werden. Schlussendlich wird ihre Lösung wieder auf die Sachsituation bezogen.
