Las sorpresas están omnipresentes en nuestras vidas. Son una especie de mini sobresaltos, micro tomas de conciencia que nos sacan del orden, de la rutina, de la costumbre o del aburrimiento. Nos convierten en personas sin pretensiones, abiertas, que asumen el riesgo de no saber, de perderse, de ser privadas de nuestras seguridades, de colapsar en nuestro centro más íntimo. La sorpresa, pequeña o grande, nos enfrenta a lo incomprensible e
impone la ausencia de sentido, aunque signifique arrebato, vértigo, desesperación.
Pero lo realmente sorprendente es que la sorpresa es una cuestión que apenas ha requerido la atención de la Filosofía. Demasiado ordinaria, demasiado anecdótica: mínima.
¿Acaso la pone a prueba? ¿La baja de su pedestal? Natalie Depraz presenta una hipótesis: la sorpresa, lejos de estar reservada al sujeto (sorprendido) o limitada al objeto (sorprendente), radica en una dinámica. No es sólo un instante sino un proceso, inscripto en el tiempo, su hilo conductor. Esta dinámica, apoyada en sus estructuras vivenciales, la atención y la emoción, le confiere un contenido filosófico específico, que la autora despeja con gran maestría y lucidez. El sujeto "cardial" es un nuevo centro para pensar la unidad de la experiencia del sujeto.
La sorpresa, la atención y la emoción forman parte de nuestra cotidianeidad de tal manera que las damos por sentadas, no cuestionamos su importancia. Pero este libro pretende hacer tomar conciencia de que la sorpresa constituye una cuestión fundamental. La sorpresa nos hace salir de nosotros mismos, obligándonos a enfrentar la alteridad. La del otro, por supuesto, pero también la de ese otro más íntimo al que, a menudo, sólo conocemos muy poco... Alteridad que es precisamente la de nuestro propio ser temporal -en parte ya transcurrido-, pero sobre todo, el que en todo momento está por llegar: el futuro.

Natalie Depraz es doctora en filosofía por la Universidad París Nanterre. Profesora de filosofía contemporánea y filosofía alemana en la Universidad de Rouen, miembro universitaria de los Archivos Husserl (ENS/CNRS) de París; fundadora de l'École rouennaise de phénoménologie y directora de Alter, Revue de Phénoménologie. Desde 2020 es titular de la Cátedra de Excelencia en Filosofía de la Universidad Galatasaray de Estambul. Especialista internacionalmente reconocida de fenomenología, vinculada con investigaciones en torno a las ciencias cognitivas, la psicopatología, neurociencia, el arte y la religión. Colaboró estrechamente con Francisco Varela y es traductora al francés de autores como Husserl o Fink. Entre sus numerosas publicaciones, cabe destacar Attention et vigilance, à la croisée de la phénoménologie et des sciences cognitives.
