Asma Moh Saïd et Chérifi Tassadite, un couple de kabyles qui vit à Redjaouna et qui a donné naissance à 9 enfants dont 5 de sexe masculin. Éparpillés un peu partout dans la région de Tizi Ouzou, les enfants de ce couple de paysans tranquilles iront fonder leurs foyers non loin du nid parental, à l'exception de l'un qui avait préféré traverser la mer pour tenter sa chance dans une des usines du Roumi. Mokrane, Mohand Améziane, Zahra, Zahia, Fadhma, font partie de cette fratrie qui vont connaitre un destin extraordinaire. Dès l'éclatement des premiers coups de feu de la Révolution ils s'engagent dans les rangs du FLN et de l'ALN, avec cette conviction et cette foi inébranlable que l'on connaissait qu'à ces êtres humains pour qui la liberté n'a pas de prix. Ces descendants des hommes libres qui refusent la soumission d'où qu'elle vienne. Les militaires français avaient compris qu'il fallait, pour pacifier la région, commencer par neutraliser ces familles kabyles, pourvoyeuses de fellaghas et dont Asma en faisait partie sans l'ombre d'aucun doute. C'était donc pour ça que Moh Saïd et Tassadite étaient souvent soumis à des interrogatoires à chaque descente sur le village de Redjaouna. Tassadite, pour semer les soldats français répondait invariablement, que ses enfants étaient éparpillés un peu partout dans le pays. Il y'en avait même un qui était émigré en France et un autre incarcéré dans une prison à El Harrach. Quant au cas très particulier de Mokrane, elle leur faisait croire que celui-ci ne faisait désormais plus partie de la famille, en raison de son reniement des traditions ancestrales. Elle ajoutait que ce fils ingrat, ainsi qu'elle feignait de le nommer, a épousé une fille citadine et qu'il ne venait plus leur rendre visite. Depuis, ils avaient décidé de ne plus chercher après lui. Les informations concernant les visites fréquentes des soldats chez Tassadite, étaient régulièrement portées à la connaissance de Mokrane par Asma Ahmed Moh Saïd, jeune frère de Mokrane qui n'avait à cette époque que 15 ans. Ce jeune adolescent, espiègle rapportait à son frère le contenu intégral de l'interrogatoire auquel étaient souvent soumis leur père Asma Moh Saïd et sa mère Chérifi Tassadite: - Nous avons reçu la visite des soldats français hier soir. Ils savent que tu es le cinquième fils de Asma Mohand Saïd et de Chérifi Tassadite. Ils cherchaient à savoir où tu habites. Ma mère leur a déclaré qu'elle ignore où tu habites et qu'elle et son mari, t'avaient renié. Ma mère te dit que si jamais ils faisaient un rapprochement, tu dois savoir ce qu'il faut leur déclarer. Pour le moment ils ne savent pas où tu es. Mais au cas où ils viendraient à t'interroger, tu confirmeras que tu as renié ta mère.
