Trato de averiguar en este libro si el sacerdote debe acceder al movimiento feminista. Bebel se ha atrevido a afirmar que el clero temía ver el derecho de sufragio en manos de las mujeres, porque estaba seguro de perder su imperio sobre ellas. ¿Es, en efecto, esa razón la que hace que la Iglesia se muestre desconfiada respecto de la insurrección de esa nueva Fronda? ¿Tiene necesidad el sacerdote de probar que no teme ver que la mujer toma un puesto digno de ella, de su delicadeza moral y de su pasado, en una sociedad que no respeta ya nada, que no cree en nada y que parece haberlo olvidado todo? Por otra parte, si la gente de Iglesia no ha dejado de ser la sola amiga de la mujer, la única o poco menos, cuya adhesión puede serle provechosa en todos los problemas que a la mujer se refieren, ¿no tiene nada que decir o que hacer de nuevo en el orden de ideas y de reivindicaciones que el feminismo trata de imponer a la atención pública?
He querido responder a estas dos preguntas. Cualquiera que sea el valor de mi libro, desafío los que, siendo extraños al movimiento feminista, lean algunas páginas, a que se desinteresen del asunto. La causa es bastante atrayente por sí misma para suplir a la insuficiencia de sus abogados y para retener a cualquiera que le haya prestado un momento de atención. A primera vista, la idea del feminismo hace sonreír. Toda originalidad, por justa y fecunda que se la suponga, se convierte en grotesca con las personas exageradas y propia para la caricatura y para el epigrama. Ahora bien, hay demasiadas personas exageradas al servicio del feminismo. Hay en él demasiadas locas, jóvenes o viejas, que le desacreditan y le ridiculizan á porfía. Se puede hasta decir que, a pesar de algunas respetabilísimas excepciones, la idea feminista ha esperado mucho tiempo la adhesión de hombres sensatos y de mujeres de buena y sana educación. He aquí, pues, desventajas serias y previas condenaciones muy peligrosas. En desquite, y acaso a causa de esa misma desgracia formada toda de pervenciones, el feminismo no cuenta casi entre sus adeptos de valor más que convertidos. Por poco, en efecto, que nos desprendamos de los prejuicios corrientes, observamos en seguida que los códigos civiles no son justos con las mujeres. La forma y las consecuencias del matrimonio civil son positivamente desfavorables para ellas. Nuestra anarquía social y algunas de nuestras tradiciones revolucionarias las exponen a situaciones dolorosas. Pobres y peor armadas que el hombre, las mujeres padecen en la lucha por la vida todas las opresiones que les imponen la maternidad, la decencia, la exclusión arbitraria de numerosas carreras, la usurpación por los hombres de la mayor parte de las profesiones femeninas y la inferioridad de los salarios. Si el rebajamiento de nuestras costumbres públicas ha hecho al hombre del pueblo más brutal, más alcohólico y más grosero, las mujeres resultan las víctimas más conmovedoras y más abandonadas. Pero hay más. Las Revoluciones de 1789 y de 1848, que dieron libertades a todas las categorías sociales, las despojaron a ellas de los pocos derechos políticos de que gozaban bajo el antiguo régimen y las pusieron así en una imposibilidad mayor de obtener las reformas más justificadas. Hay, pues, demasiada justicia y demasiado graves intereses en juego en la causa de las mujeres para no vencer las pusilanimidades y las bromas que han impedido hasta ahora su triunfo o retardado su progreso.
