En un pequeño pueblo del Peloponeso, Equecrates encuentra Fedon, uno de los hombres presentes durante las últimas horas de Sócrates. Con ganas de escuchar la historia de una fuente fidedigna, Equecrates presiona a Fedon para que le contara lo que paso; algo que Fedon hace con mucho agrado. En la celda de Socrates se reunieron una serie de amigos; pero los interlocutores son solo Criton y dos filosofos pitagoricos, Simias y Cebes. El relato comienza con Socrates proponiendo que el suicidio nunca es solucion, un verdadero filosofo debe mirar más alla de la muerte. El alma, Socrates sostiene, es inmortal, y el filosofo pasa su vida entrenandose a desprenderse de las necesidades del cuerpo. Socrates ofrece tres argumentos: el primero es el argumento de los Opuestos; el segundo es la Teoria de la reminiscencia, y el tercero es el Argumento de afinidad. Ambos, Simias y Cebes, presentan dos objeciones.
About the Author: Pocas son las noticias verídicas que se tienen acerca de la vida y la personalidad de Platón. Sin embargo, se encuentran muchas conjeturas, alusiones, y anécdotas que pueden darnos una idea de lo que fue el hombre Platón. El arco de su vida se fija entre 428 y 347 B.C. Vivió entonces casi ochenta años. Pertenecía Platón a una de las familias más encumbradas de la aristocracia de Atenas, ya que su linaje, por parte de su padre, se le traza hasta los regentes de Atenas; por el lado materno, su madre era hermana de Carmides y sobrina de Cridas, ambos grandes oligarcas al terminar la guerra del Peloponeso. Cuando queda viuda se vuelve a casar con Pirilampo, amigo de Pericles. Un dato frecuentemente mencionado es que Platón descendía directamente del legendario Solón: poeta y estadista, y legislador ateniense. El historiador Diógenes Laercio en su Vida de los filósofos ilustres, anota que el nombre del filósofo era Aristocles, pero que era más conocido por su apelativo "Platón," dado sus anchas espaldas. Por los Diálogos sabemos también que tuvo dos hermanos: Adimanto y Glaucón. Aristóteles en su Me¬tafísica (I, G), también anota que Platón fue un gran amigo de Cratilo, quien fue discípulo del oscuro filosofo Heráclito. Después de la muerte de Sócrates en 399 B.C., Platón, reside en Mégara, no muy lejos de Atenas; muy pronto emprende viajes por Egipto y Sicilia. En la VII Carta, Platón dice: "Tenía yo casi cuarenta años cuando fui por primera vez a Sicilia." Es aquí donde Platón entabla amistad con Dión, cuñado del "tirano" Dionisio. A su regreso a Atenas, Platón funda en 388 la "Aca¬demia;" la pri¬mera escuela de filosofía. A ruego e insistencia de Dión, Platón regreso dos veces más a Sicilia; algunos comentaristas insisten que su interés no era tanto a la amistad con Dión, sino a su propio interés de ver si podría ser posible la instalación de su 'republica ideal, ' como el traza en el dialogo, La República. El triángulo: Sócrates, Platón, y Aristóteles. Cuando Platón cumple los veinte años de edad, así como muchos otros jóvenes en Atenas, comienza a seguir a Sócrates.
