Resumen:

Año 1076. Faysal al-Akram, un joven sirio hijo de Hasán al-Amín y nieto del jeque Tawfiq al-Sharif, a los diecisiete años comienza a tener sueños en los que ve unos ojos de mujer con un color verde intenso, y escucha una voz que le dice palabras que luego no puede recordar cuando despierta.

Aquello se prolonga durante un año y llega a cobrar un interés prioritario para él, a tal punto que está dispuesto a que aquellos maravillosos ojos tenga un rostro, un cuerpo y un nombre. En sus averiguaciones aparece la mítica Hermandad de las Señoras de los Sueños, que se dice que está conformada por mujeres místicas con grandes poderes y sabiduría, capaces de entrar en las mentes humanas durante sus sueños.

Un nabí errante ciego, mas de enorme clarividencia, le dice que aquella mujer que da tal forma se le presenta en sueños es nada menos que la misteriosa Sayyidat al-Ahlam, ser entre mujer y ángel que es la princesa de aquella hermética hermandad. Que ella lo ha elegido y lo está esperando muy lejos, y que él la podrá encontrar en un castillo de los caminos de Persia.

Aprovechando un viaje a la lejana Samarcanda en busca de caballos y dromedarios, Faysal va dispuesto a encontrarla. En el larguísimo viaje sorteando peligros, las visiones de aquellos ojos cambian y se terminan convirtiendo en la vista completa de la misteriosa mujer, que tiene la facultad de presentarse ante él sin que nadie más pueda verla. Pero ella oculta su rostro bajo un velo de seda, aumentando su intriga. Siguiendo las nuevas pistas, en su regreso de Samarcanda Faysal se dirige hacia el sur del mar Negro.

En un accidentado viaje de más de un año y de haber estado a punto de morir un par de veces y de ser salvado por ella, Faysal llega hasta Trebisonda, la ciudad de los palacios, los techos de oro y las hermosas princesas. En la noche ella se le vuelve a presentar completa y, a la mañana siguiente, Faysal ya sabe que aquella joven le ha robado el corazón y la razón. Allí averigua su nombre: Farsiris, y también quién es, dónde encontrarla y el porqué y para qué lo está esperando ella. Por más que ella es una princesa cristiana nieta de los reyes de Trebisonda, sin atender a razones decide ir a buscarla a Samsun y cumplir con su destino, porque aquello es maktub y así está decretado.

Años después, Faysal tiene que cobrarse el ojo por el ojo para vengar a sus padres y hermanos y a todos los familiares que otra tribu le ha matado, y enfrenta la terrible decisión: sumirse en un baño de sangre o mantener limpias las manos con las que acaricia a su esposa y a su hija.

La novela transcurre en las décadas finales del siglo XI, principalmente entre la confluencia del río Jabur con el Éufrates, en Siria, y los territorios del reino bizantino de Trebisonda, en el sur del mar Negro, península de Anatolia, actual Turquía. Trata de la juventud del jeque Faysal al-Akram y de Farsiris al-Amira, los padres de Amina, así como de la niñez de esta.
