About the Book

English summary: This important volume of memoirs of early Buddhist history combines the translated texts of the famous Chinese travelers Xuanzang and Faxian. Both texts benefit here from updated translations that take advantage of recent historical studies and a much more complete knowledge of Buddhism than was the case for earlier works on both. Travelling to Buddhist India in search of religious texts, both men left complementary descriptions of their voyages that together provide us a revealing image of ancient China and India.
About the Author: Jean-Pierre Drege, directeur d'etudes a l'Ecole pratique des hautes etudes, a ete membre, puis directeur de l'Ecole francaise d'Extreme-Orient.
